Such an awesome resource!! A lot of this could be considered "common sense" but when you are in a marriage relationship for any period of time (in my experience) you tend to miss the obvious! About the Author
Russell L. Colling, CPP, CHPA, M.S. Security Management - Michigan State, has worked for over 40 years in healthcare administration and healthcare security management and is also the founding president of the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS). Mr. Colling was formerly the Executive Vice President of Security Services at Hospital Shared Services of Colorado. He has authored two books with the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and also has extensive experience in security litigation cases.

Tony W. York, CPP, CHPA, has over twenty years’ experience administering healthcare security programs and is chief operating officer for HSS Inc., a specialized security firm based in Denver. York, who is board certified in security management, holds the Certified Protection Professional (CPP) designation and the Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) designation. A past president and board chair of the International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety (IAHSS), York chairs the Council on Guidelines. This council produces the Healthcare Security Industry Guidelines and Healthcare Security Design Guidelines. A regular contributor to the advancement of the healthcare security field, York is recognized internationally as an industry expert and is a frequent lecturer and author on healthcare security and leadership. A native of North Carolina, he earned a B.S. degree in Criminal Justice from Appalachian State University, an M.S. in Loss Prevention & Safety from Eastern Kentucky University, and an MBA from the University of Denver.

Having worked in healthcare/hospital security for many years, you simply cannot find a better source on the subject. Past editions of this book were very good, but this time it's great! Building on past editions and incorporating the latest guidelines from TJC and the IAHSS, you could use the data in this book to set up a complete protection system for any healthcare facility. It covers so many topics, some complex, in an easy to read format complete with charts, reference materials, etc.
I highly recommend this book to anyone invloved in healthcare protective services from the officer 'on the beat' to top level hospital executives. It's must read for all directors, managers and supervisors of healthcare security forces. This book will not disappoint!

AN EQUAL SEQUEL

I’ve been a fan of horror for most of my life. So when I first heard of the concept of taking famous people like Abraham Lincoln and making him the fiercest vampire hunter of all time the concept intrigued me. The result of the book ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER delivered on all levels. The only problem was that it ended.

Not to fear as author Seth Grahame-Smith returns us to the world of the vampire picking up where the previous book left off. But don’t think it’s all about Lincoln as he apparently doesn’t make it past the opening of the book. Instead this book follows the life and adventures of Henry Sturges, the vampire who helped Lincoln win the War Between the States. It follows his life after Lincoln passed and in the changing world of not just humans but vampires as well. With the south defeated the bad vampires (yes there are good and bad vampires in this world) seem to be dwindling. With the exception of one major enemy.

Sturges is called on by the leader of the good vampires, those what want to live in conjunction with humans, to seek out an evil vampire that has been killing the emissaries sent to Europe. It’s near the turn of the century and Henry does so obligingly, taking the opportunity to visit his homeland for the first time since leaving it all those years ago. As he does so he also fills the reader in on how he came to be a vampire and what happened to him in the years before Lincoln.

As with the first book famous people from various walks of life cross paths with our hero. When he first arrives in London he meets a famous author as well as a doctor friend of his who knows a lot about deductive reasoning and detective work as well. He’s framed for a series of murders occurring in the west end of London (guess who this gets called on) and he works his way about seeking his prey who in turn has sought him out as well.

The story progresses through the ages, taking him through both world wars and into the present. Along the way he gets involved with Tesla, Mark Twain, Rasputin, a zeppelin, the assassination of JFK and more. These aren’t really spoilers, as you read the book it becomes abundantly clear where he is going from one point to another. And through it all is the mysterious evil vampire that he’s been searching for through the years. The revelation of who that is becomes the surprise twist in the book and comes far earlier than the last chapters.

The book is an easy read and Graham-Smith presents and engaging story that holds your interest throughout. Perhaps the only problem lies in the amount of time covered in the book. To take on so many years in a single book is a bit much but it does a fine job of it. It will also seem inconceivable to some that he would meet so many famous people over the years. But hey, this is fiction and makes for a good time while reading. Suspend belief and jump on the bandwagon. Enjoy the ride.

In the end my only regret was that the book ended. And with it following Sturges up to the present another sequel isn’t likely. Perhaps more books involving other good vampires that crossed Sturges path could happen. Only time will tell. And fortunately Henry Sturges has plenty of time on hand.

Like ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER, the previous novel in Seth Grahame-Smith’s speculative historical horror series, THE LAST AMERICAN VAMPIRE will instantly suffer the indignity of being misjudged as B-movie-style fiction or a monster mash-up. You would be doing yourself a disservice if you judge this book merely by its cover --- or title.

What Grahame-Smith has accomplished once again is a novel incredibly ambitious in scope that hits on all cylinders. It gives us the story of vampire Henry Sturges, as told to the author himself, and the role he played throughout centuries of historical events. To begin with, by placing himself as a character here, Grahame-Smith does a brilliant job of blending fact with fiction --- sort of the literary version of watching a film like The Blair Witch Project and speculating what was real and what was merely the fictional creation of the author or filmmaker.

Henry was introduced in ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER and formed an allegiance with the famous American President who had been hunting down vampires since his teens. Lincoln, Henry and other immortals were part of a group that called themselves “The Union” and were sworn to protect mankind. At the beginning of the novel, when Henry meets with Grahame-Smith to share his history, he ruminates that “nothing kills a vampire as quickly as the past.” His recollections begin with his resurrection of the recently assassinated President. Having failed to protect his friend from John Wilkes Booth's fatal bullet, he proceeds to “make” Honest Abe an immortal by passing on to him his vampire curse.

Confused and shocked, Lincoln accepts his death and rejects his revival. He promptly throws himself into a fire to escape his new fate --- leaving Henry alone once again. Henry travels to Europe where he befriends mortals and vampires alike as he continues his mission to protect mankind from evil vampires. He works with Bram Stoker and Arthur Conan Doyle to thwart Jack the Ripper --- a nefarious individual who ironically is the immortal vampire that was Henry’s own maker.

Henry touches upon one historical event after another, leaving his mark everywhere he goes. He was the impetus for theater manager Bram Stoker's writing of the novel DRACULA, as well as inspiring the work of famous inventors/writers such as Nikola Tesla and Mark Twain. However, it was a series of events taking place in the New World era that saw the colonization of America from the Native Americans that would form a deadly relationship that will follow Henry through time. His “making” of a woman named Virginia Dare --- the actual female who saved Pilgrim John Smith --- will create a nemesis that haunts him throughout history.

THE LAST AMERICAN VAMPIRE races through time from event to event, including both World Wars, Russia's October Revolution, the fatal Hindenburg flight and JFK's assassination. Along the way, Henry is surprisingly reunited with Lincoln --- who did not perish by burning --- and the two colleagues become active participants in all the events mentioned, and much more. All the way, their work is shadowed by Henry’s New World creation, Dare, who always seems to be a step ahead of them.

This novel is a wonder to behold, even if you see vampire fiction as light fare. The history involved is credible and spot-on, and the speculative job of blending the tale of immortal vampires throughout these events is nothing short of amazing. Seth Grahame-Smith is on the verge of taking off to meteoric heights as he is not only involved in bringing more of his novels to the big screen, he is rumored to be reworking Stephen King's IT for the big screen, along with remakes of Ray Bradbury's SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES and Chris Columbus' Gremlins. I enjoyed this more than Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter - and I DID enjoy that earlier work!

I think it's safe to say that the majority of viewers enjoyed Forrest Gump. Picture this quiet and unassuming man, present at – and occasionally inadvertently contributing to – some of the 20th century's most iconic moments, and meeting some of the people that made the century what it became.

Now, let's take that same concept and twist it around a little – no, a lot. To begin with, let's take away the tangential connection between the protagonist and events – let him take an active role in actually shaping history, especially American history. Then, take away the limitations of time – instead of beginning with the 1950s, let's go all the way back to the first American colonies. How – employ the immortality (and other aspects) of vampirism.

“The Last American Vampire”, by Seth Grahame-Smith, is a follow-up to the author's successful “Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter”. A strong supporting character in the first novel, vampire Henry Sturges, takes the lead for this epic novel, spanning approximately 400 years of American and world history. Grahame-Smith allows us glimpses into the lives – and occasionally, deaths – and very occasionally, rebirths – of various historical characters from that vast time period.

Much of the novel centers around some of the great historical mysteries of the past 4 centuries. What DID happen to the colonists at Roanoke? What was the real story and motivation behind Jack the Ripper? And was there a conspiracy behind the assassination of John F. Kennedy? Most importantly, the novel addresses the concept of “What IS an American? What IS the American Spirit?” And, who better to address that ideal than someone who has lived through the entirety of it?

HOWEVER … I found one major frustration in this book. Our main antagonist … I never did learn just what motivated this character to get involved in events. What drove this person from who they were at their beginning to evolve – or revolve – into the person they became? I picked up a hint or two, but it never seemed to me that the author was interested in their motivation, nor the factors that led them to change from their initial appearance to the plotter & schemer they became. (It is extremely difficult to write this without providing a spoiler – I trust I succeeded for those who have not yet read the book.)

I am VERY glad that I took the time to read this book – or in my case, listen to the audio rendition. Despite it's one glaring hole, I enjoyed it very much. I hope to see Henry Sturges again in a future work, providing the author can come up with a fresh take on him and on his circumstances.

If one were to diagram Canin's fictional form, it would have to be of classical proportions: clean, noble, and golden. His latest book presents us with four beautifully told long short stories. In each, a man muses over his past and realizes how little control he has had over pivotal moments in his life. "Accountant" is a gripping variation on the turtle and the hare fable. The turtle, and narrator, is Abba Roth, a serious student turned dutiful accountant. The hare is Eugene Peters, Roth's academically disinclined boyhood friend who was able to parlay his enthusiasm for auto mechanics into a hugely lucrative business. Now solidly middle-aged, they have a showdown of sorts at a fantasy baseball camp overseen by none other than the great Willie Mays. As Roth surprises everyone with his able performance on the field and incredible awkwardness everywhere else, he finally gives into his deeply buried "impulse for uproar and disorder." The title story also tells the tale of a methodical, even fussy man brought up short by the bold, unscrupulous acts of richer and more powerful figures. In each story, Canin proves himself adept at articulating moments of profound embarrassment followed by flashes of self-knowledge that are either invigorating or demoralizing. Moving and memorable. Each Story Deserves a Rating

It's not easy to assign one rating to this book. It's not a novel--it's a compilation for four stories, each about 50 pages in length. The stories vary in quality and deserve to be looked at independently, though there are some common themes. For one, all of Canin's narrators are male. Second, baseball is mentioned more than once. Finally, all his characters seem to be supremely flawed, which I guess is the author's attempts at making them more realistic, but the characters never actually seem real. In three of the stories the narrators seem to suffer from the same flaw--they're arrogant and stupid. They get themselves into the type of predicaments you expect from network sit-coms. It left me wondering if the author is giving us insight to his own personality, or if this is just how a doctor who attended Harvard views the rest of us.

The four stories included are:

The Accountant (2 stars): The story is narrated by the titular accountant. Two childhood friends grow apart when one chooses college and the other goes directly into the workforce. The story is about the mistakes the accountant has made in life and the smug attitude that prevents him from realizing his missteps.

Batorsag and Szerelem (2 stars): This one is a coming-of-age tale narrated by a boy whose eccentric brother is extremely good at math. The older brother is also hiding something from his family. This story had a ton of potential, but I just felt like it wasn't executed well at all. It jumps around a lot and there's not enough character development. I believe there was enough story here for a novel; the author just didn't take the time.

City of Broken Hearts (4 stars): This one is a well-written, somewhat tragic story about a man in his sixties who is recently divorced and having trouble adapting to single life as well as relating to women and his son, who is attending college on the other side of the country. When the son visits his father in Boston, the two go to a ball game together, since baseball is the old man's passion. The father in this story is a sympathetic character. It's easy to understand his confusion and frustration. His baseball team lets him down, his wife has left him for another man, and his son is arrogant and so interested in proving he's a modern, sympathetic man that he doesn't take time to let his father remain part of his life.

The Palace Thief (5 stars): The best story in the bunch. A young teacher at a prestigious prep school feels some sympathy for a troubled student, which leads to him making some errors in judgement. The story revolves around their teacher-student relationship, as well as their relationship 40 years later. All of the stories in the book are compelling, but this one is the best. The main character is still flawed, arrogant, and perhaps stupid in his choices, but this novel offers the best character study and it's easily the stand out of the bunch.

Compelling and unforgettable

This writer was recommended to me by a writing coach. I started with The Palace Thief and can't wait to read the rest of Ethan's books. He creates unforgettable characters, fully realized and interesting, in situations that we can all identify with. I usually read non-fiction, but this is one writer who has given me a good reason to go back to well-written fiction. I'm glad to see that the art of the carefully chosen word is not forgotten.

Ethan Canin's The Palace Thief is a collection of four short novellas that are all connected by the same themes; that of human nature and that emptiness we often feel deep within us whenever things are tough. Three of these stories are worth being praised, while the fourth might have been better had it been in a different collection.
The title story is probably the best of the whole book (and, also comes last, save the best for last right?). Here, we have a teacher who is faced with his greatest challenge, one that will span over many decades, one that will leave him changed forever. This story is touching and very affecting, about one man's struggle with morality. A real gem. My second favorite story was Batorsag & Szerelem, a moving story about one boy and his struggles brought upon being the youngest of the family. He is ceaselessly compared to his older brother, who is more intelligent and popular than he is. Living up to his big brother's reputation is one thing he will learn to try and passby in order to be happy with himself.
The story City of Broken Hearts is a very moving story about one man's realization of his life's emptiness. William is divorced and misses his son, who lives in another city. When his son comes back for a visit, he tries to come to peace with the past. But it is only when his son sets him up on a blind date that William will realize that he needs to fill the emptiness that is slowly eating him up.
After these great stories, it's kind of a downer to think back on the book's first story, entitled Accountant. Although the story is quite original and entertaining, it lacked the power and writing skills the author displayed so perfectly with the following three stories. Another story about a family man who has never been really happy with himself, this story is also one that deals with self realization and self depreciation. An enjoyable read, if only that.
Canin displays a great range of human emotions in this short collection. His writing is very affecting and powerful. His choice of words is always delibarate and purposeful. Every sentence has a meaning and leads somewhere, unlike other stories in collections by lesser authors, where half of it is composed of emptiness and the other half of a very weak plot and paper-thin characters. You will find none of that in this book. The Palace Thief is a highly engaging collection by one of the best new voice in dramatic fiction.

About the Author

Susan Ferguson is Professor of Sociology at Grinnell College, where she has taught for almost 20 years. Ferguson regularly teaches Introduction to Sociology, and her critically acclaimed anthology, "Mapping the Social Landscape: Readings in Sociology" (McGraw-Hill, 2010) is used in introductory classes around the country. Ferguson also teaches courses on the family, medical sociology, the Sociology of the Body, and a new seminar on social inequality and identity. Ferguson has published in all of these areas, including the research collection, "Breast Cancer: Society Shapes an Epidemic" (with co-editor Anne Kasper, Palgrave, 2000), and "Shifting the Center: Understanding Contemporary Families" (McGraw-Hill, 2011). In addition, Ferguson is the General Editor for Contemporary Family Perspectives, which is a series of research monographs and short texts on the family (Sage Publications).

Ferguson, who grew up in a working class family in Colorado, still considers the Rocky Mountains to be her spiritual home. A first-generation college student, Ferguson was able to attend college with the help of scholarships, work study, and financial loans. She majored in Political Science and Spanish and also completed certificates of study in Women s Studies and Latin American Studies. After working a couple of years for a large research grant sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development, Ferguson entered graduate school and completed her master s degree in sociology at Colorado State University and her Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Her areas of study are gender, family, women s health, and pedagogy, but her primary enthusiasm is for teaching.

This is a great compilation. The readings cover a wide variety of family, social, and intersectional issues with well-researched data and, for the most part, very readable voices. It's been my favorite "textbook" as an undergrad.

Interesting book

The book came on time and in the good conditions. The renter is legit. This text was part of the Sociology course of family structure. Found it interesting and somewhat controversial.

Rip off

It could have been submitted as a stand alone novel. Why share it in three parts? Marketing? I bought though the 2 parts only to see the ending but seriously, I felt ripped off.

It's really too bad cause the author has the talent to make the readers laugh. And that's what kept me going. But at the end of the day, I would've appreciated reading it as a whole instead of the cliff hangers for a few dollars. Charge me the book, pls just don't make me buy pieces of it to appreciate the whole thing.

wedding time

Rebecca is pregnant and Marcus is thrilled. Not that either of them has ever given any thought to having children or for that matter where their relationship is going. In fact, marriage and children are Rebecca’s two biggest fears and she been faced with both of them in a very short period of time.

The rest of this book is the trials and tribulations of trying to have a relationship, plan a wedding, and be pregnant all while trying to deal with a media that wants to eat you up and spit you out. It’s kind of fun but at the same time Rebecca starts to get on my nerves because everything things start to get rough she runs….to Washington, for coffee, to Amanda. It gets old quick. It was a good series but quite frankly for the length of the books and the price tag accompanying them, just have me pay for it as a box set or put a price on all three. Here’s the one thing I know, if the books are good enough, people will pay to read them.

Oh and I almost forgot to mention….the editing, proofreading of the third book needs to serious be checked. I re-read a couple of pages twice just to make sure I had not missed something….and did we suddenly forget what we had wrote about whom was supposed to walk with whom at the wedding. It didn’t work because the editors missed it.

About the Author
Donald R. Askeland joined the University of Missouri-Rolla (now the Missouri University of Science and Technology) in 1970 after obtaining his doctorate in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Michigan. His primary interest has been in teaching, resulting in a variety of campus, university, and industry awards and the preparation of a materials engineering textbook. Dr. Askeland has also been active in research involving metals casting and metals joining, particularly in the production, treatment, and joining of cast irons, gating and fluidity of aluminum alloys, and optimization of casting processes. Additional work has concentrated on lost foam casting, permanent mold casting, and investment casting; much of this work has been interdisciplinary, providing data for creating computer models and validation of such models.

Wendelin Wright is an associate professor at Bucknell University with a joint appointment in the departments of Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering. She received her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. (2003) in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University. Following graduation, she served a post-doctoral term at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the Manufacturing and Materials Engineering Division and then returned to Stanford as an Acting Assistant Professor in 2005. She joined the Santa Clara University faculty as a tenure-track assistant professor and assumed her position at Bucknell in the fall of 2010. Professor Wright's research interests focus on the mechanical behavior of materials, particularly of metallic glasses. She is the recipient of the 2003 Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching, which is Stanford University's highest teaching honor, a 2005 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, and a 2010 National Science Foundation CAREER Award. Professor Wright is a licensed professional engineer in metallurgy in California.

Just another exploitative, overpriced textbook

There is no legitimate reason for a paperback textbook to cost over $200. Just like every other textbook publisher, Cengage is taking advantage of the fact that students are forced to purchase the exact book assigned by the professor. A new edition comes out every few years with essentially the exact same information, but the problem sets are switched around a bit, so you can't do the homework for the class without the latest edition. And good luck buying a used copy of a book that just came out this year. Shame on you for so blatantly exploiting struggling college students for easy money instead of selling products at a fair price. Just because the educational system allows you to have a monopoly over these markets doesn't mean it is ethical for you to charge such exorbitant prices.
