THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

One of The New York Times Book Review’s 10 Best Crime Novels of 2016!

Now in paperback—the next blockbuster thriller for those who loved The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl... “a finely-crafted novel with a killer twist” (#1 New York Times bestselling author Paula Hawkins).

On a rainy afternoon, a mother's life is shattered as her son slips from her grip and runs into the street...

I Let You Go follows Jenna Gray as she moves to a ramshackle cottage on the remote Welsh coast, trying to escape the memory of the car accident that plays again and again in her mind and desperate to heal from the loss of her child and the rest of her painful past.

At the same time, the novel tracks the pair of Bristol police investigators trying to get to the bottom of this hit-and-run. As they chase down one hopeless lead after another, they find themselves as drawn to each other as they are to the frustrating, twist-filled case before them.

From Publishers Weekly
At the start of British author Mackintosh’s accomplished debut, five-year-old Jacob Jordan lets go of his mother’s hand for an instant on a rainy evening in Bristol, England, and darts into the road, only to be struck and killed by a hit-and-run. The investigation lands on the desk of Det. Insp. Ray Stevens and his eager new detective constable, Kate Evans. Mackintosh alternates between the slow, but fruitless, police work and the movements of artist Jenna Gray, who’s haunted by Jacob’s death and relocates to an isolated Welsh village, where she keeps to herself, warming slightly to the local vet after finding an abandoned puppy, and even then keeping the details of her previous life a secret. Back in Bristol, Ray and Kate work the case to the ground, despite a lack of leads; predictable sparks fly, even though Ray is happily married with two children. Mackintosh easily shifts points of view and keeps readers on their toes, slowly upping the suspense, so that when she does reveal her twists they—mostly—work. (May)\n

Didn't See That Coming!!!
By Amanda
I'm going to admit I did not like the beginning of this book. I almost gave up and stopped reading at 40% but a lot of people I trusted gave this book high ratings so I kept at it. I even questioned how this could possibly be a thriller.. At around 46% the rug is completely pulled out from under you and the ride to the end is wonderful. This is one of the best plot twists I've ever read as it made me want to reread the beginning (which I didn't like) to see how I missed out on what was going on!

I'm not going to say much about the actual story itself because there is just about no way to do it without spoilers and you absolutely want to go in blind. I guessed part of what was happening in the beginning stages, but there is no way I could have came up with the whole picture on my own. So don't be afraid by other people's negative reviews with it being "predictable." They are just full of themselves IMHO.

The characters themselves are all fully fledged out and complex. The police have some back stories that are going on at the time of the main story line that are not fully resolved but I didn't truly care about them anyway. They are just there to keep the pacing of the story and not really necessary to the plot, but didn't necessarily detract from the story either.

Overall great story. I'd read more from this author but I'm not sure she can out do this one.

Suspenseful with surprises, too
By Theresa
I hadn't intended to write a review of "I Let You Go" tonight but here goes. I liked it, I really, really liked it. The book is slow, sort of plodding in the beginning. Stick with it. The stodginess serves to make the horrible more horrible when you are gobsmacked by the plot and the characters. The characters are fully drawn and are believable in their good and evil. Never a false note on that score. They speak and act as real people.
The many twists and turns will keep you tied to the book. There were times when I might have been rude to my fellow travelers because I was so absorbed. It's a good read, not a perfect read, but it kept me glued to the page and I was sorry when it ended. I could have kept on going--I liked it that much.

By Julie Kennedy
The entire premise of this book hinges on an event that so utterly unbelievable it's impossible for me to understand the good reviews. I kept reading after seeing some of the reviews say things pick up in the 2nd half, even though the first half is like watching paint dry. It does indeed pick up in the second half, however when you get all the way to the end and the 'mystery' is solved, you are left shaking your head that you spent hours of your life reading it.

SPOILER ALERT - Do not keep reading if you are planning to read this book.

The idea that this abusive mentally ill man just happens to be driving in a drunk rage with his wife in the car and HAPPENS to spot his illegitimate son who he's never met (product of a one night stand) crossing the street and decides to run over him and kill him is insane. Seriously, the entire plot of this book hinges on this hit and run absurdity. And then, the abused wife decides she need to take the blame for it because she's worried the guy will kill her? You don't find this out until the last few pages, leaving you shaking your head that you read the whole thing.

Encourages you to re-think your approach
By A Customer
I felt I knew most of the techniques about interviewing , but this book made me re-think my approach. It identifies the interview almost as a battle with you as the defender who needs to divert the attacker away from your weak points. I had never thought the way you sit was important. I had never thought that you needed to be so devious, but it is true ! At the interview you are playing a game and you need to know thet rules you need to win.

The best pocket guide to interviewing!
By A Customer
As a recruitment consultant, I often lent this book to my candidates, and certainly recommended it to everyone who enquired. Now someone has taken it, and I can't remember who!!
Shame it's out of print, because it sat so neatly in coat pockets, and made the best reading for job applicants while waiting for the right time to approach the reception desk. :-(

Basic interviewing tips
By Rhonda B
Basic interviewing tips for those just starting out. For example, do you really need to be told to wear a suit, bring a copy of your resume/CV, or research the company your are interviewing with? If so, this book's for you. But then, so is the internet, where all of these "tips" are available for free. Perhaps there is really nothing new to say to those learning how to perfect their interviewing skills, and if so, the best advice I can give to everyone (and myself) is to practice in front of a friend who can give you constructive criticism.

A practical, common-sense, approach to chess.
By Paul Leggett
I purchased this book after having attended some seminars where I was able to hear GM Hansen first-hand. The book is practically like getting a transcript of four of his sessions, with the only downside being that you can't ask him questions as you read!

GM Hansen has a gift for communicating sophisticated ideas with clarity and simplicity. Far from being a collection of tips, tricks, and "get better quickly" gimmicks, the lessons are designed to teach one how to think better about chess, and how to focus on what is relevant and important.

It is an easy book to read, and I mean that in every possible positive way. I highly recommend it.

Art and the Bible (IVP Classics), by Francis A. Schaeffer

"The lordship of Christ should include an interest in the arts," writes Francis Schaeffer. "A Christian should use these arts to the glory of God, not just as tracts, mind you, but as things of beauty to the praise of God." Many Christians, wary of creating graven images, have steered clear of artistic creativity. But the Bible offers a robust affirmation of the arts. The human impulse to create reflects our being created in the image of a creator God. Art and the Bible has been a foundational work for generations of Christians in the arts. In this book's classic essays, Francis Schaeffer first examines the scriptural record of the use of various art forms, and then establishes a Christian perspective on art. With clarity and vigor, Schaeffer explains why "the Christian is the one whose imagination should fly beyond the stars."

Art and the Bible: A must read for anyone interested in the arts
By Robert Pruitt
Francis Schaeffer's book Art and the Bible is a classic when it comes to developing a Biblical theology of the arts or in thinking about theology and the arts Christianly. Almost every book about the arts or theology in the arts, from a Christian worldview that has come out since this book was first published in 1973, references Schaeffer's Art and the Bible. The book began as two separate essays, the first essay is Art and the Bible and the second is Some Perspectives on Art. These separate essays were combined and published as the comprehensive and concise book Art and the Bible.

In this thought provoking and essential work advocating for the arts, Schaeffer outlines a sound Biblical apologetic for the arts. Schaeffer addresses all types of art from architecture, to statuary, bas-relief, poetry, painting, music, drama and dance, to the art of Heaven itself. The Biblical support of art of all kinds is presented clearly by Schaeffer who walks the reader carefully and thoroughly through important supportive passages in both the Old and New Testaments.

In the book's foreword, by Michael Card, added in the revised 2006 edition, Card says, "this book, a primer on Biblical creativity, [seeks] to drum into us the idea that we create out of our worldview and that it is our responsibility to align that point of view with scripture before we continue on." Card rightly highlights one of Schaeffer's main points that the artist should "take seriously the Lordship of Christ in every aspect of their creative lives."

Essential for Christians & non-Christians on impact of art
By A Customer
This book, a collection of two essays about art and its relationship to Christianity and Christian philosophy is fascinating.
First, one major positive is Schaeffer's calling for the Christian to apply several criteria to art and the evaluation of it. He strongly discourages a purely "romantic" interepretation of art (meaning just how it makes you "feel.") He implores the Christian (and the non-Christian for that matter) to make full use of both intellect and emotion (as well as a host of other criteria.)
The first essay concentrates on what the Bible actually has to say about art. The second essay concentrates on the physical creation of art, intention of art, impact, and several other dimensions of this many-sided subject. It touches on some basic principals of philosophy of art as well as the Christian world view. Also, of extreme importance is the subsection on art within its cultural context.
My only complaint is the short length of the book. Schaeffer occasionally didn't fully explore an idea. I know an exhaustive treatise could never be devised, but this is a lot of subject matter to tackle in a 63 page book. On the other hand though, this concise pamphlet will get his ultimate points across and is accessible to those who don't have philosophy or art history degrees.
This book is a welcome addition to both art criticism and the Christian perspective on art.

A Good Primer
By A. Langley
Art and the Bible was published in 1973 by Francis Schaeffer and his L'Abri Fellowship as an inquiry into the place of the arts in the Bible and the Christian life. It is now marked as one of the foundational works in the theology of the arts, particularly because of its efforts in developing a specifically biblical theology from an evangelical perspective. The book consists of two essays: the first focusing on what the scriptures say about art; the second elaborating upon a picture of the arts for Christianity.

In the first essay, Schaeffer examines the role of the arts as portrayed in the scriptures, and this primarily in the Old Testament. A common foundation can be seen among those who think and write in the field of theology and the arts, and that is a holistic understanding of creation and humanity in which there stands no true antagonism between the spiritual and the physical, and this thought is what begins Schaeffer's first essay. He arrives at this holistic perspective from the Biblical teaching that God is sovereign over all creation, and he points to four important points he says that the Bible "makes clear", namely:
* God made the whole man
* In Christ the whole man is redeemed
* Christ is the Lord of the whole man now and the Lord of the whole Christian life
* In the future as Christ comes back, the body will be raised from the dead and the whole man will have a whole redemption. (7-8)

The implication drawn from this is that since God is Lord over the whole of man and creation, he is Lord over the creative arts as well.

From this point Schaeffer moves to a discussion on art having to do with worship, and he begins this with one of the most common objections against Christian involvement in the arts: "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image" (Ex 20:4-5). He explains that if this is properly interpreted, it can be seen as not a restriction against graven images per se, but against the worship of them. This is evinced in the fact that at the same time God gave the ten commandments, he also gave the instructions for building the tabernacle; in these instructions were included "almost every form of representational art that men have ever known," Schaeffer says. (12). Among these forms of representational art were blue pomegranates. Schaeffer points to this as an indication that God enjoys art that is not necessarily "photographic," but there is freedom for the imagination to expand upon the "real."

From the tabernacle, Schaeffer moves to a discussion on the artistic nature of the temple. The design of the temple that the Spirit of the Lord handed David (1 Chron. 28:11-12) we see full of non-utilitarian art. In 2 Chron. 3:6, for example, Solomon "garnished the house with precious stones for beauty." From this, Schaeffer rightly concludes that "God is interested in beauty" (15). Also he importantly notes that we see more than specifically religious subject material used in worship-related art, which means that "specifically religious subjects are not necessary for art" (19).

Next, Schaeffer considers the "secular art" of Solomon's day. This secular art of which he speaks is Solomon's throne, described in (1 Kings 10:18-20). However, it seems questionable whether or not Solomon's throne would be considered "secular." As Israel was a theocracy, it seems as though it would be difficult to make such a distinction between "secular" and "religious" art. What would seem to be more appropriate would be to look at the arts in the other cultures surrounding Israel at that time, which he does not do.

In his discussion poetry, Schaeffer, using an example from the Septuagint of David singing, shows that art does not have to be put into the temple in order for it to give praise to God. He also points to the Song of Solomon as an example of secular art that has been inspired, in a way, by God.

From poetry, Schaeffer shows that drama and dance too is not only allowed but are used and encouraged in the Bible. Ezekiel plays out a drama as a prophesy, and David danced victoriously in his ephod. Schaeffer does right to point out that simply because someone does something in the Bible does not mean that it is prescriptive. Finally, pointing to the music and song in Revelation 15:2-3, Schaeffer shows that God has a plan for the arts even in the afterlife. Schaeffer's work in providing these examples of the arts from the Bible is an invaluable tool with which to counter the attitudes that express some contempt for the arts. However, because virtually all of the examples are taken from the Old Testament, it might loose weight to a reader who interprets the New Testament as being a switch from the physical to the spiritual.

In his second essay entitled "Some Perspectives in Art", Schaeffer enumerates eleven perspectives from which a Christian can view art. He begins with what he says is the most important point for Christians to consider, namely that a work of art has intrinsic value. Schaeffer says that it is "not something we merely analyze or value for its intellectual content. It is something to be enjoyed" (34). It has this value because it is a creative work, and creative work has value because it is a product of our being made in the image of God. While Schaeffer is on the right track with these thoughts, he seems to be a bit myopic in his understanding of art. It is true that art is not simply to be analyzed for its intellectual content, however that is at least part of what we do with art. He seems to acknowledge this later by chiding the "art for art's sake" perspective. He goes on to say that art is something to be "enjoyed" in and of itself, yet he seems to forget that some art is not "enjoyed," especially art that is prophetic in nature. In his first essay he pointed to Ezekiel performing the prophetic "drama" for Israel, and Schaeffer affirmed this as art. Yet was Ezekiel's drama "enjoyed" in and of itself apart from its intellectual content? The point of prophetic art is not to be "enjoyed," but on the contrary, to be disruptive to a people's status quo.

Next, Schaeffer touches on the interesting notion that "the effect of any proposition, whether true or false, can be heightened if it is expressed in poetry or in artistic prose rather than in bald, formulaic statement" (38-39). This is a point well made, and an important one to consider, though it is unfortunate he did not spend more time elaborating upon this.

His third point addresses the continuity or discontinuity with normal definitions in a work of art. He applies this not only to the use of words (in poetry and prose), but in the visual language of symbols as well. He suggests that there must, for greatest effect, be not too great a discontinuity. Innovation is good, but when one diverges too far from the norm (such as in total abstract painting), something is lost in the piece of art.

Fourth, he states that simply because something is "art" does not mean that it is "sacred." This he ties into his second point, that the propositions contained in a piece of art can be false.

Schaeffer next moves to the four criteria by which he believes art should be judged. First, art should be judged by its technical execution. If art is done with technical excellence, Schaeffer says that the artist should be praised even if he differs in worldview. This is a particularly challenging and needed statement since many Christians reject art completely if it differs even slightly from their version of Christian truth. Next, art should be judged by its validity: whether or not the artist has been honest to himself in the creation of his art. At this point Schaeffer criticizes any art that is created for financial reason, labeling it "invalid." This is, however, an invalid criticism because of its myopic idea of what the creative mind is and what its parameters are. For example, if this criteria were applied to the art of filmmaking there would be few--if any at all--that meet it. Film is a corporate art, an art that involves more than one mind, and thus involves individual creative ideals bending to one another in cooperation and, often, compromise. Likewise, the sheer amount of financial resources that are required to produce a film entail a kind sensitivity to those who will watch it. Rather than automatically labeling any art "invalid" that is done for a patron, the art should be judged by how "valid" it is within its parameters (e.g., the patron's wishes, the public's interest, etc.). The third criteria Schaeffer says art should be judge by is whether or not the worldview it espouses is consistent with the scripture, and this he says can actually be accomplished by the non-Christian, and can sometimes not be accomplished by the Christian. The last criteria is how well the content of the art matches its form. The example he uses for this is T.S. Eliot's The Wasteland: in it the broken nature of the message was reflected in the broken form in which it was written.

Regarding style, Schaeffer says that it changes as language changes, but that the Christian should have these three elements in his style: it should be the style of his day, it should be indigenous to where he is geographically, and it should reflect the Christian worldview. In his next point, he asserts that while there is no "godly" or "ungodly" style, some styles become symbolic of a certain message, and thus styles must not be used unthinkingly.

Schaeffer then suggests that Christian art has a place for both major and minor themes--minor themes that uncover the lostness and brokenness of man, major themes that offer a positive perspective in light of redemption--but the emphasis should be on the major themes. He does make room for individual pieces of art to show only minor themes, but he says that the full body of the artists work should reflect the major. He does well to leave room for exceptions in this, because it should also be considered that the many artists in the Christian community are members of one body; perhaps it is one person's job to focus on minor, and the other person's to focus on redemption.

What makes this pamphlet particularly unique is its depth of focus on what the scriptures say about the arts, but his second essay on Christian perspectives is also helpful in that it attempts to apply more specifically what we find about art in the Bible. In total, Schaeffer's Art and the Bible can serve as a helpful tool especially for the evangelical who needs an introductory Christian perspective on the arts.

Before Day 'a Mawnin' Growing up in the Enchanted Island of Jamaica, by Paul Virtue

Paul Virtue was born in Kingston Jamaica in 1946, spending his early years on a cattle farm near Spanish Town, the old sixteenth-century Spanish capital and the setting for many of the short stories in this book. He crafts a series of humourous and sometimes serious vignettes of what life was like in the middle of the twentieth century growing up as a free-range child. He and his siblings had an unrivaled ability to get into mischief as they roamed the countryside near the family farm and at their grandparent’s house in Hanover, in Western Jamaica. The teenaged years saw more adventure, exploring the mountains, sea and sky of his glorious island, but not least the unsuccessful quest for girls.
The family farm, Browndale, was where the formative years unwound. It was on the western edge of the St. Catherine plains and was surrounded by a diverse rural society that was largely employed in farming, and in particular, the sugar cane economy. The society was a palette of many different racial groups from Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East that had been a virtual melting pot since the early plantation economy. The Jews had arrived as a part of the Spanish settlement of the 16th century; the French as refugees of the early 19th century slave revolution in St. Dominique (Haiti); the Dutch settlers arrived as part of the 1667 land-swap that gave the Dutch the country of Surinam in exchange for what is now Manhattan. European immigration waves starting in the 1840s, with each initially clinging to their culture for a generation or so before being swept up at the edges into the whirlpool of the melting pot, leaving smaller and smaller cores of pure blood migrant groups.
The stores in this book revolve around the interplay between these groups but are not an attempt at anthropological study; more so they are observation of a youngster who struggled to find his place, seeming to fit everywhere, yet nowhere.

It pleased her particularly that they were attached by invisible strings to colourful curves of rapidly moving air. How clean and clever that was! You throw up something like a handkerchief, you tether it and by its headlong wish to fly away, you are towed along… Like the kite-surfers in this opening scene, the characters in David Constantine’s fourth collection are often delicately caught in moments of defiance. Disregarding their age, their family, or the prevailing political winds, they show us a way of marking out a space for resistance and taking an honest delight in it. Witness Alphonse – having broken out of an old people’s home, changed his name, and fled the country – now pedalling down the length of the Rhne, despite knowing he has barely six months to live. Or the clergyman who chooses to spend Christmas Eve – and the last few hours in his job – in a frozen, derelict school, dancing a wild jig with a vagrant called Goat. Key to these characters’ defiance is the power of fiction, the act of holding real life at arm’s length and simply telling a story – be it of the future they might claim for themselves, or the imagined lives of others. Like them, Constantine’s bewitching, finely-wrought stories give us permission to escape, they allow us to side-step the inexorable traffic of our lives, and beseech us to take possession of the moment. ‘Perhaps the finest of contemporary writers in this form’ – The Reader 'Every sentence is both unpredictable and exactly what it should be. Reading them is a series of short shocks of (agreeably envious) pleasure...' – A.S. Byatt, The Guardian 'Flawless but unsettling' – Boyd Tonkin, The Independent **WINNER of the BBC National Short Story Prize**

this rich tea takes the biscuit
By Acorn
David Constantine's collection of sixteen short stories takes us into the world of outsiders and people whose lives are not going well. All of us are likely to be in such circumstances at some point, but we always hope that in the long run life will be kind. Yet learning how to cope with sadness, loss, loneliness and uncertainty is an important part of what gives us our humanity.

The title story, along with Fault and Doubles (no, there is no tennis fetish going on here) are vignettes of lovers drifting apart. They are at that stage when one side realises the limitations of the other and glimpses a freedom elsewhere that they need to grasp before it disappears, perhaps forever. The House by the Weir and the Way explores the same theme in more depth. Two women living together in a house near the Way of St James are getting old and, it seems, entering terminal decline. A young pilgrim stays with them and she re-kindles a flame of hope for the older of the two women, who then has to decide whether to go gently into that good night.

Goat tells of an old man living rough in freezing mid-winter when he is visited by a cleric and a young woman doing a soup run. Despite the cold and forbidding surroundings, they enjoy their short time together eating, drinking and dancing. There is a spark of warmth even in the darkest times. After the cleric leaves his job, and his wife leaves him, he visits the old man again but the situation has changed dramatically. The cleric's attempts to cope with tragedy are ineffectual and we see this haunt him to the end of his days.

Constantine can be deeply lyrical in his descriptions of outsiders. In Alphonse he follows the life of a tramp in the south of France who is enjoying freedom after his family placed him in care in England where he staged an escape. In the longer story An Island, a former priest spends some months on an island far off the Cornish coast and writes to a woman he loved but could never bring himself to embrace. He is lonely but also attracted to silence and solitude. He understands that other people enjoy conviviality and the intimacy of relationships, but in the end he cannot throw himself into the fray of life. He knows he will always be alone and wandering, and does not have the will to be any other way. It is a powerful story with beautiful depictions of nature and the small world of island life.

Several of the stories glimmer with hope and we see people who have suffered begin to find a new way for their lives. In Asylum, a young woman who is profoundly traumatised and who expects to be in an institution for life is encouraged by a visitor with his own tragic past to write a story of hope. If she can help fictional others then she just might be able to save herself.

A lonely man who has an abiding obsession with poetry and not much else opens his world to a woman who calls at the door to conduct a survey. In Strong Enough to Help it takes a while but something connects between them and we sense that this might be his path to being part of a community again. In Mr Carlton the eponymous character has just attended his wife's funeral. After stopping on a motorway he observes an old couple in their house which reinforces his sense of loss and sadness. A young woman stays with him. She is pregnant and fearful, but together they can give each other solace and strength for a short time.

Ev is living in an institution and after a setback at work is feeling down and withdrawn. She sets about restoring a graveyard near where she lives. Her work inspires others and gives meaning to her life, but near the end of Ev's Garden the whole enterprise looks set to collapse. In the past you know that Ev would have retreated into herself at this point but her new friends rally round and Ev is ready to fight the good fight.

The closing story, Romantic, is about a woman who lives a settled life and her love for a man who is given to wandering off for extended periods. They appear too different to make a go of things, but their love persists and the woman finally comes to an understanding of how they might achieve intimacy.

David Constantine is well known as a poet and his imagery and choice of language give these stories profound sentiment and poignancy. He is sympathetic to a wide range of characters who are often ignored or invisible and hopefully reading these stories will encourage us to be more sympathetic too.

The restorative power of nature, of communing with nature, and a love of the natural environment come through strongly in many of these stories. Another theme is the importance of contemplation and solitude. Listening to our inner voice is fundamental to understanding who we are, even if this can lead us into the realm of despair as well as joy. This fine collection should be read slowly and savoured. The experience will be rich and rewarding.

Required reading for government employees and managers
By Tommy Engram
Ken Miller may never replace John Locke or Thomas Hobbes as a great writer of political theory. However, his contribution to the people who actually administer our governments is important. In a very simple style, Miller makes a strong argument that government employees need to start thinking about the cost of government services and the customers who receive their services. Government does make widgets. The cost, quality, and timeliness of those widgets are matters of great public concern.

Miller's book is filled with redundancy, probably to drive home its very important points. During these repetitions, I think Miller may confuse his readers on the difference between outputs which he calls widgets and outcomes, especially in regard to polling. Systems theory holds that government is a black box which requires certain inputs like tax revenue, policy decisions, voting, and feedback. These inputs are processed inside the black box to produce outputs like building permits. An output produces an outcome such as the timely completion of a project. The outcome produces either positive or negative feedback which is an input to the black box.

While I agree that public opinion polling can't tell us much about the or output - a building permit - it is certainly a valid means of feedback on the outcome - public satisfaction with the pace or quality of growth in the community. Government has many customers, including the developer requesting the permit and the community that experiences both the disruption of new construction and the advantage of a new facility. If we accept Miller's important assertion that government employees must focus more on satisfying their customers, then polling to determine public satisfaction with the outcome of government's efforts is critical.

Otherwise, Miller says what needs to be said in terms that are helpful, but not threatening, to people inside government agencies. The book is a quick read and it is very understandable. It should be required reading for all public employees. It may also be a beacon of hope for those of us who stand in a long line to renew our driver's license, only to face a surly bureaucrat who never heard the term "customer service".

Awesome book

I heard the author at a training seminar. If managers at Government read these books costs would drop and service would soar. Practical advice that works. My office is better already.

It is a good book but it does not bring any new ideas. Though it makes important contributions to the reality of most government agencies worldwide, in how to work on common challenges.

Sam Langford: Boxing's Greatest Uncrowned Champion, by Clay Moyle

A compelling and thorough biography of the great Sam Langford.
Standing no more than 5’ 7” tall, Sam Langford was one of the 20th century’s greatest fighters. In 1951, the great featherweight champion Abe Attell was asked if Sugar Ray Robinson was the best of all time, either as a welterweight or middleweight. He named Stanley Ketchel as the greatest welterweight he’d ever seen and said that, as for the middleweights, he’d take Sam Langford, “the greatest of them all at that poundage.”
Remarkably, the man Attell felt was the greatest middleweight fighter in history fought and defeated many of the leading heavyweight contenders of his day. Over time, he matured physically and grew into a light heavyweight, then began fighting heavyweights on a regular basis, but he was almost always the much smaller of the two combatants.
Nat Fleischer, founding editor of The Ring magazine, called Sam one of the hardest punchers of all time, and ranked the little man seventh among his personal all-time favorites “Sam was endowed with everything. He possessed strength, agility, cleverness, hitting power, a good thinking cap, and an abundance of courage He feared no one. But he had the fatal gift of being too good, and that’s why he often had to give away weight in early days and make agreements with opponents. Many of those who agreed to fight him, especially of his own race, wanted an assurance that he would be merciful or insisted on a bout of not more than six rounds.”
Other leading sportswriters of that era had even higher opinions of Sam. Hype Igoe, well known boxing writer for the New York Journal, proclaimed Sam the greatest fighter, pound-for-pound, who ever lived. Joe Williams, respected sports columnist of the New York World Telegram wrote that Langford was probably the best the ring ever saw, and the great Grantland Rice described Sam as “about the best fighting man I’ve ever watched.”
At the time of Sam’s induction into the Boxing Hall of Fame (October 1955) he was the only non-champion accorded the honor. Many ring experts considered Sam the greatest pound-for-pound fighter in the history of boxing Under different circumstances he might have been a champion at five different weights: lightweight; welterweight, middleweight; light heavyweight; and heavyweight.
Blind and penniless at the end of his life, Sam lived quietly in a private nursing home But when one visitor expressed sympathy for his circumstances, Sam replied, “Don’t nobody need to feel sorry for old Sam. I had plenty of good times. I been all over the world. I fought maybe 600 fights, and every one was a pleasure!”
With 98 photographs and illustrations, primarily from private collections.

Review
Sixty-four years ago, a blind and indigent Sam Langford was rediscovered through an award winning article published in the New York Herald Tribune. Now, in 2008, Clay Moyle 'discovers' Langford anew-in greater depth and with remarkable clarity. In tenaciously applying the forensic skills of a seasoned sports historian and archivist, Moyle plots a stunning tale which is set against the backdrop of the pervasive racial mores of the times in which Langford lived and fought, and in the process reclaims for posterity the life and career of one of boxing's truly great figures. ---Adeyinka Makinde, author of Dick Tiger:The Life and Times of a Boxing Immortal

As the title of this book indicates, Sam Langford was, indeed, an 'uncrowned champion'-one of the greatest pound-for-pound pugilists ever to step through the ropes. The only reason Langford never held a world title was that no champion gave him a chance to fight for the crown, even though Sam was eminently qualified. Now, the uncrowned champion has found a champion in Clay Moyle, an eminent boxing historian. This book gives Langford the recognition he has deserved for such a long time. Langford was small in stature, but he was larger than life. He was capable of knocking opponents twice his size colder than a mackerel. Had there been any justice in the world of the early 1900s, Langford would have been champion of the middleweight, light-heavyweight and heavyweight divisions. Moyle s epic chronicle of Langford s life in and out of the ring redresses the fighter s slide into obscurity during the half-century since his death. The author deftly balances the triumphs and tragedies of this extraordinary man s career. This book is a must-read, from the opening bell to the last. --Charles R. Saunders, author of Sweat and Soul: The Saga of Black Boxers from the Halifax Forum to Ceasars Palace

With his richly detailed new biography, Clay Moyle has restored the indomitable Sam Langford to his rightful place in the history of American sports -- and demonstrates along the way that Jack Johnson was right when he called Langford 'the toughest little son of a bitch that ever lived. --Geoffrey C. Ward, author of Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson

As Good As It Gets
By feedthecat
Clay Moyle's book is a superb example as to how to write a boxer's biography. Providing many hitherto unpublished - if not unknown - facts about the life and career of the "Boston Tar Baby" (b. 1883, d. 1956, fought professionally from 1902 to 1926, in prime around 1908 to 1912, started losing sight in 1917) and many of his opponents (for example, Moyle explains what became of the long-forgotten boxer Danny Duane, who easily defeated both the young Langford and the highly-skilled Jack Blackburn, yet gave up what would seem to have been a very promising boxing career), the author sprinkles his book with many interesting, oftentimes funny, anecdotes about his subject. Of course, the best aspects of this book for boxing fans are Moyle's descriptions of Langford's boxing style and abilities (including accounts of when and against whom he started to utilize certain tactics and techniques); his accounts of Langford's major bouts - sometimes seemingly providing a 'blow-by-blow' description of the action; the many cited opinions of Langford's opponents and other boxing experts as to his strengths and weaknesses, as well as where he stands among boxing's greats; and, of course, the many fine photographs of the great man and his peers, many of which have never been published before.

My only real complaint about this book is that the author did not provide Langford's official weigh-in weight (and that of his opponent) for more of his bouts (for most fighters, this wouldn't be that big a deal, but, with someone like Langford, who gradually grew from a lightweight into a heavyweight and was competitive in each of the weight divisions between those two classes, it's quite important to know, especially since he often took on fighters who substantially outweighed him). But that's a small quibble given how great this bio is (I hope that the upcoming biographies of Joe Gans and Harry Greb are even 80% as good as this one).

Moyle provides Langford's ring record at the end of the book, as well as an index (which is always handy). As for the chapter titles, they are as follows: 1) Weymouth Falls, Nova Scotia (in Canada - it's Langford's birthplace); 2) Champion of Cambridge Street (in Boston); 3) Joe Gans, "The Old Master"; 4) Joe Walcott, "The Barbados Demon"; 5) Tackling the Big Fellows; 6) England; 7) A Black Heavyweight Champion; 8) The Iron Man (William Hague); 9) Chasing the Michigan Assassin (Stanley Ketchel); 10) Encounter With a Razor; 11) Ketchel; 12) The Fight of the Century (Jack Johnson vs Jim Jeffries); 13) The Joplin Ghost (Jeff Clarke); 14) The Rabbit Punch; 15) Australia; 16) Mastering (Sam) McVea; 17) Troubles Down Under; 18) "Gunboat" (Ed Smith); 19) An End to Heavyweight Title Hopes; 20) Passing of the Torch; 21) Heavyweight Champion of Mexico; 22) Retirement; 23) The Forgotten Man.

Forgotten Greatness
By Pugwash
Sam Langford is typically not on the list of modern boxing historians top ten, or even top twenty-five, but this is their oversight. Sam Langford was a pioneering trailblazer in a young sport.

Clay Moyle is one of many authors revisiting great warriors of the early days of boxing. Recent biographies have been written about Bob Fitzsimmons, Joe Gans and John L Sullivan to name a few.

This tome reads quickly, is highly entertaining and highly informative.

Sam Langford is portrayed as not only a fierce competitor, but also an intelligent, quick-witted and generous man. He had a huge following, but because of the times he fought in, was avoided by the serious contenders and Champions of his day. Although smaller of stature, and lighter than most of the men he fought, he had so much talent that he found ways to break these men down.

Although he lived his advancing years blind and penniless, he refused to give in to bitterness. While he could have fought fighters like Jack Dempsey, Jess Willard and Luis Firpo in big money fights, he had to content himself with fighting the great colored fighters like Sam McVey and Joe Jeannette again and again.

Interestingly, he often carried these fighters through many rounds, because he knew he would have to fight them again, and he wanted to keep interest up for a potential larger gate.

Reading about Langford's life and times opens up new vistas about what it meant to be a black athlete in the early 20th century, and how important a strong mental outlook is in life.
