About Ruby 2.0

The Definitive Ruby Resource

This is a great, updated version of the now-classic Programming Ruby series from The Pragmatic Programmers. The book is a great reference covering the whole of ruby and many related features. This is the only current Ruby book that attempts to cover everything Ruby. The book is very well organized with topics in outline-form subsections making it easy to pinpoint one's exact learning or reference needs.

Programming Ruby 1.9 & 2.0 reads a lot like O'Reilly's "Definitive Guide" series but is also as usable as a "In a Nutshell" series reference book. I'm very impressed by the way the authors were able to write a detailed but concise (as concise as a huge language like Ruby can be anyway) programming book.

Books to have

This book is centered around snippet code so if you are looking for a cookbook start to finish project book this is not for you. The good side of this story is I have it loaded on my work computer. When I have syntax issues I simply perform a find on the subject. this has proven to be a very productive when working. Between stackoverflow the open community web source, and this book when coding I solve problems quickly. I am a professional Ruby / Ruby on Rails developer. For all those who just know Ruby on Rails you should really learn Ruby. What happens if one of your gems does not work? or gets monkey patched? or just doesn't work? You will be forced to dig deeper and you will need to know Ruby to sort out the R-on-R MVC framework guts.

Trust me I tried just learning Rails years ago, now I know Ruby I am very seldom defeated. If you like this comment get the book GREAT resource.

A very thorough book that helped me get started with Ruby.

I needed to learn Ruby in hurry, as there was an urgent need to rewrite a module that was giving trouble in Perl because of a problematic CPAN module. This book gave me all I needed to quickly learn the language and rewrite the module in Ruby.

Grade 6-9-Following the Big Shake, which destroyed most of civilization, a small group of individuals (the "proovs") retreated to Eden, learned how to improve themselves genetically, and sealed their environment off from the sprawling ruins inhabited by the remaining normals. Plagued by genetic defects, a toxic environment, and illnesses, normals like Spaz live in the Urb at the mercy of latch-bosses and their gangs. Spaz knows that his survival depends on Billy Bizmo and the Bully Bangers, so when they send him to rob an old man, he obeys. Ryter willingly surrenders his few possessions except for the pages of the book he is writing-the first time Spaz has seen anything like this. And when the boy sets out to find Bean, his dying foster sister, Ryter insists on accompanying him. Along the way, they are joined by Lanaya, a proov, and Little Face, an orphan. Finding Bean is hard enough; helping her appears to be impossible, until Lanaya takes the motley group back to Eden and confronts the rulers with the truth about the outside world. This is science fiction, not a fairy tale, and everyone does not live happily ever after... Also, the science part of this sci-fi is vague. However, readers who don't examine it too closely will be caught up in the novel. There is definitely room for a sequel...

Gr. 6-9. Although this owes a lot to such titles as Lois Lowry's The Giver and Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, there is much to admire in Philbrick's tale of a postapocalyptic future. Gang member Spaz, a young epileptic, is ordered to rob an old man by the name of Ryter. Instead, he's befriended by the sympathetic, courteous gentleman, and when Spaz receives word that his foster sister, Bean, is dying, it's Ryter who leads him; Little Face, a young orphan boy; and Lanaya, a female "proov" (genetically improved human), on a dangerous journey to Bean's side. Lanaya takes the group to her home in Eden, an idyllic proov community, much different from the dangerous, toxic Urbs where "normals" live. When her plea to allow the group to stay in Eden is denied, the others return to the Urbs, where Ryter is brutally murdered and Spaz and Bean are separated. Despite the dark turn of events, however, there's stubborn hope and strength of conviction in the book's moving conclusion, and Philbrick has created some memorable characters in this fast-paced adventure, which will leave readers musing over humanity's future. Purchased this book for my daughter as it was a required read in one of her High School classes.

Purchased this book for my daughter as it was a required book for her class at school.
My review will be on the book itself, as I have not read it, but will update this review with her perspective of the book's story when she has completed it.
We decided to go with the paperback version and it is great quality and if taken care of, should last a good while.
I am not sure what the library binding version does or looks like but it was cheaper but in the end, we decided to go with paperback.
Got this book quick and in perfect condition.

A fantastic book for pre-teens.

I bought this for my students to use in a read along in class. The kids loved it. There was much to discuss and the journey of the main character was fun to follow. I wish there was a sequel to this book because I know my students would love to read it as a class. This was the first book I've ever used as a read along in class and it was a fantastic experience. Many of them read ahead because they were hooked and then they fidgeted in their seats knowing what was ahead. That was funny to watch!

A Thinking Middle Grader's Dystopia

Most of the popular dystopian novels for younger readers that I have read recently rely most heavily on adventure/action. Think Hunger Games or Maze Runner and the like. And, they are fine books.

This one is different. It is much more like a quest novel, with a thoughtful calm overriding everything else. Sure, there are dangers, and escapes, and close calls, and villainous enemies, but no attempt is made to make any of that feel truly threatening. And there is no heroic derring-do; not a single hero ever lays a hand on a single bad guy. The good guys talk, they reason, they argue, they convince, they show the other guys a "better way", and so they win out.

This is a slim book. The alt-world is just sketched in. The plot is sort of obvious. The characters don't exactly break new ground. But, you know, you could almost say the same thing about "1984" or "Brave New World".

So, a young reader's book of ideas, (equality, planning for the future, caring for others, individuality, sacrifice, nobility, loyalty, respect, dignity), wrapped up as an adventure story. Not bad. (By the way, if you sample the first chapter, bear in mind that this book takes a little time to get going, so the sample will give you a good idea of the writing style and the vocabulary, but not so much the eventual story.)

�Knight’s Tale breaks boundaries. It uncovers the dark heart of chivalric idealism, injects the political seriousness of epic into the timeless summer of romance, insists on a pagan outlook within a Christian culture, and draws compassion for female suffering from a man’s world. Along with the exquisite anonymous poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the Knight’s Tale is the most intricately structured and stylistically pleasing of medieval English romances. For these reasons, it is worthy of its own edition, but what makes it particularly suitable to an illustrated edition is how its narration works by condensing actions and their effects into powerful images and figures. The Knight’s Tale has, in fact, been illustrated many times, but never so thoroughly as in the current edition. Moreover, past illustrations have tended to romanticize or sentimentalize the story, eschewing its most violent and disturbing images. The illustrations in this edition attempt to recapture Chaucer’s mature vision of the noble life, which refuses to deny the tragic aspects of the chivalric equation of love with war and war with honor. Past illustrations have also tended to adopt a Gothic idiom. The illustrations in our edition adopt a Classical Greek idiom drawn from the Parthenon frieze, Attic black- and red-figure pottery, and ancient Greek sculpture—an idiom suitable to the setting of the tale in legendary Athens and Thebes as well as to Chaucer’s humanist impusle.

If considering Theseus’s prosecution of war as a civilizing force, one can point to the fact that he puts an end to Creon’s "tirannye" (941), restoring the bodies of the desecrated dead to the Argive widows. However, if his objective in attacking Thebes is to avenge the widows on Creon, why does he destroy the city after he has already killed him and routed the Theban army, tearing down "wall, and sparre and rafter" (line 990)? The motive is hardly humanitarian, nor even strategic in the military sense since the Theban forces have already been defeated. Its only objective is pillage—to pay off the Athenian troops—and, of course, it is while ransacking the dead that they find Palamon and Arcite still alive among a pile of corpses, a detail unique to Chaucer’s text. While such a practice was endemic to chivalric warfare, it was difficult to contain once started, and it would inevitably produce results inimical to Theseus’s stated purpose for going to war against Thebes, which was to right a wrong done to a group of helpless women. As Maurice Keen writes, the trouble with the practice of looting-as-pay was that to pay off soldiers in this way

was not the same as to disband them. They had to be left at large, still armed with equipment that was their own, beyond control; and so whole provinces were subjected to the indiscriminate pillaging of soldiery that sought to claim a share in chivalry but whose manner of living was the antithesis of what chivalry stood for, the protection of the poor, the fatherless and the widow.

Knight’s Tale poses the pivotal question about war: Is there such a thing as civilized warfare, as war fought for a just cause in a controlled manner as a means of restoring order to society, or do all wars inevitably lead to acts of savagery and excess that make a mockery of policy?35 Ancient Thebes is the story of a sustained, sordid, brutal, and self-indulgent lust for power and pleasure eventuating in spectacular violence—Cadmus and the dragon-tooth warriors, Oedipus’s primal crimes against nature, Eteocles and Polynices’ impiety and fratricidal warfare, Creon’s desecration of his nephew’s corpse and subsequent murder of his niece Antigone. The idea of a moderate use of force to serve the common good is alien to the Theban legend. Statius considers the possibility of a good war by inserting the Athenian warlord Theseus into the myth of Thebes. Theseus brings peace to Thebes and, in Statius’s version of events, saves Antigone, but only after an unforgettable orgy of death has occurred. As discussed above, Chaucer returned to Statius’s brooding treatment of the Theban material in order to foreground it. He rereads the Teseida through the lens of the Thebaid, turning it from a conventional love story into a philosophical reflection on the nature of love, war, and governance—both earthly and cosmic. Indeed, it becomes a kind of theodicy, asking why humans must suffer so much and whether there is a benevolent order that transcends the individual ills of human experience, providing an origin for temporal governance. In this vein, Chaucer presents the stadium Theseus builds to hold the tournament as a theatrum mundi, a microcosmic space in which Theseus will try to civilize the unruly dispute between Palamon and Arcite, itself symbolic of the dynastic rivalry between Polynices and Eteocles. 36

Ominously, there is nothing to stop Theseus’s men from just such rapine, as he "dide with al the contree as hym leste" (line 1004).

For Chaucer, it seems it is not justice but fortune that decides the outcome of war. The eldest Argive widow reminds Theseus of the role of "Fortune" in war, and Chaucer returns to the idea of the uncertainty of military ventures in the temple of Mars murals, where an enthroned "Conquest" (line 2028) is depicted with the sharp sword of Damocles hanging over his head by the thinnest of threads. Perhaps Theseus learns this lesson, as he moves steadily away from militarism in Chaucer’s narrative, changing the rules of the tournament to prevent mortal combat and ending the strife with Thebes through the diplomacy of the parliament. Yet, even in the mock battle of the tournament, death cannot be prevented, despite his best efforts. Is Chaucer suggesting that the prospect of limited warfare for some greater purpose (in this case the eventual pacification of Thebes) is human folly?

A Textbook of Sorts.

I bought this book to see what sort of information it held. It was moderately useful but is written more like a textbook. It's not for the casual reader looking to read about preservation. I am giving it four stars as it did help me, but I was not dazzled by it.

HP: PP&E - Indispensable!

As a graduate student in Historic Preservation, the information contained in this volume will be indispensable as I practice in the field. One of the major obstacles to restoration/rehabilitation projects is the cost. Projects sputter along because initial estimates are often based on typical remodel costs rather than the expenses involved in restoring to a previous time and workmanship. This book is comprehensive in scope, detailed in content and, I predict, will be well-used.

Great text book.

I assigned this to my preservation project management class for the first time this semester and so far I'm very impressed with how well the book explains the differences between new construction and historic projects, and how it covers preservation-specific job issues.

swimming faster

a great start for maglischo's trilogy for swimming. his works have reflected the change in science supporting the sport and evidence which marks the improvements that have occured in swimming in recent years. the law of diminishing returns highlights the ever increasing importance that the smaller things can contribute to the pushing the limits of human performance and endeavor. with the collection of this volume to his later works ('swimming even faster' and 'swimming fastest')one sees the progress and development of swimming that contributes to a more developed understanding for coaching competitive swimmers today. this becomes imperative in a sport that is still developing sport science and physiologically in countries like new zealand. swimming faster provides a bridge across the ever widening gap in these areas outlined above.

an excellent race-training reference

I'm primarily a rower, so I can't speak about the swimming-specific sections of this book. But I can rave about the more generally applicable sections. I've used this book for several years to design training programs for various rowing events, from 500 meters (about 1.5-2 minutes) to 2,000 meters (about 7-8 minutes) to head races (20 minutes and longer). Maglischo's explanations of how to balance the levels of effort in a training program for sprint or endurance events is tremendously helpful, as are the explanations of how to periodize training programs and create daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly programs.
The only tiny criticism I have of this book is that I would find it slightly more useful if the swimming distances included approximate times for the events. That way, it would make transferring the principles to comparable events in different sports more straightforward.
I recommend this book to any coach or athlete of any racing sport. You'll find not only physiological issues addressed, but also issues concerning pacing and race strategy -- a must for anyone desiring an internal focus during racing.

This is a scientific academic book for competitive swimming coachs. It covers various aspects of swimming: physiology, training, blood testing, tapering, stroke mechanics, guidelines for competition, diets, etc. The author E.W.Maglischo is a world-famous swimming coach at Arizona State University read many references, It made this book very persuasive. His first edition of this book was well received throughout the world, and made swimming coaching more scientific. This book is the second edition. If you are a swimming coach and want to be a better coach, you must read this because this is a world-standard book about swimming.

Interesting concept!

Scrum is a very interesting concept to implement into the workplace to more quickly and efficiently complete projects. This book provides a very simple, easy to follow, step by step guide on the basic principles of scrum and how to implement it into your workplace. If you're like me and have "heard" of this concept and are intrigued by it, yet don't fully understand what it is or how to implement it, then this book is perfect for you! Highly recommended read!
