Useful for the recovering damaged voice.

This book is great...I will say that, but it's a bit misleading. Before I purchased this I previewed a few pages on Amazon and it told me everything that I needed to know about what I was looking for...but overall this isn't exactly what I was looking for...especially not for $80. This book is more for people who have damaged their voice or people who have vocal disabilities and want to jump back into voice work. It's not for the singer who wants some tips on how to improve their voice which is who I am, but you can get some helpful information on how to relieve tension to have a much freer sound...that's really all I got from this book. I skipped about four or five chapters because they were just talking about vocal damage and how to bounce back from that. Maybe I will pick it up again and see if I can find anything in it that I possibly missed.

Invaluable resource

This book is fantastic, I am a voice therapist and it is an invaluable resource to me in my work with children and adults with voice disorders.It has reignited my interest in the area of voice work and I love the holistic approach that it promotes. The exercises are easily explained it is so practical. I am also using it to help me to explore and develop my own voice and this has been extremely beneficial for my hobby of acting. I would highly recommend this book .

FANTASTIC. Everyone should read this book. The 'rolls royce' of books about the voice and voice work.

This book is very valuable for anyone who works with the voice in any area. Using the voice when Presenting and Public Speaking is very important, and is the area I work in. This book is invaluable.

I read a review of this book by Pamela Parry in the British Voice Association Newsletter, and she summed it up really well
'A right gem that has been waiting in the wings tried to squeeze itself through my letterbox, Voice Work: Art and Science in Changing Voices by Christina Shewell. It's one of those big bendy books, 522 pages and what a veritable `pick'n'mix' Christina has given us. For me this is the Rolls Royce of books that has been purring away in the garage, and something that the author ought to be immensely proud of'.

As Patsy Rodenburg says in her foreword, Christina bridges the worlds between voice therapists and voice work teachers, and describes this as an "an important and unique book----a book that should be embraced by the voice world and owned by anyone working with the human voice".

If you are interested in voice in any form, then get hold of this book. Easy to read, packed with information, and it will leave you feeling good after reading it. I can't recommend it highly enough

About the Author

Jerome Klapka (K.) Jerome was an English writer who is best known for his comic travel story, Three Men in a Boat, and the essay collections Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow and Second Thoughts of an Idle Fellow. Raised in poverty, Jerome entered into various careers in the railway, theatre, education, and law before his comic essays were accepted for publication. His writing career firmly established with the publication of Three Men in a Boat, Jerome went on to publish more than thirty works of prose and plays before his passing in 1927.

Wonderful!

I think JKJ is such an underrated author! He has been a favourite of mine since I happened to pick up a copy of "Three Men in a Boat" and found I couldn't put it down.

This autobiography is no less amusing and insightful.

He does not divulge deeply personal matters (marriages, kids, etc), but it is not a smarmy, tell-all book, just a class act - like Jerome K. Jerome himself.

Excellent Read

Loved this as I have enjoyed and learnt from Jerome's other books. I found his chapter on WW 1 particularly enlightening, fascinating to hear his own eyewitness account of the war which is so different from most of the history books. His soul searching description of his spirituality gives one a lot of pause for thought.

I preferred some chapters more than others which is why I gave it 4stars but continue to be impressed by his keen observations of his life and times.

As renowned Old Testament scholar Bruce Waltke writes in the preface of this book, the Old Testament's every sentence is 'fraught with theology, worthy of reflection.' This book is the result of decades of reflection informed by an extensive knowledge of the Hebrew language, the best of critical scholarship, a deep understanding of both the content and spirit of the Old Testament, and a thoroughly evangelical conviction. Taking a narrative, chronological approach to the text, Waltke employs rhetorical criticism to illuminate the theologies of the biblical narrators. Through careful study, he shows that the unifying theme of the Old Testament is the 'breaking in of the kingdom of God.' This theme helps the reader better understand not only the Old Testament, but also the New Testament, the continuity of the entire Bible, and ultimately, God himself.

About the Author
Bruce K. Waltke (PhD, Dallas Theological Seminary; PhD, Harvard Divinity School), acknowledged to be one of the outstanding contemporary Old Testament scholars, is professor of Old Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, Florida, and professor emeritus of biblical studies at Regent College in Vancouver. He has authored and coauthored numerous books, commentaries, and articles, and contributed to dictionaries and encyclopedias.

Charles Yu is currently pursuing doctoral studies in the Department of Hebrew and Semitics at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

One Of The Best Books Out There On Old Testament Theology

As a seminary student I am quite familiar with a lot of books that act in teaching Old Testament history and theology. Mr. Waltke's book is just about the best book a teacher could ever use and a student could ever read. The book is not aimed at simply exploring God's actions in the text of the Old Testament. It begins by exploring what exactly is the Old Testament and how students (and teachers for that matter) can learn about Old Testament theology in order to give them a greater understanding of the OT in terms of overall Biblical theology. When the book finally begins to explore the books of the Old Testament, the reader has a wonderful foundation in order to not only understand what each book of the Bible has to say, but ultimately what God wants His people to understand. Whether we are talking about a student in seminary such as myself or the casual (but well read) everyday fellow. If there is a problem with the book it could be that the way the book looks, large and overbearing, one might feel that he could easily get lost in the text. Not true. Mr. Waltke's personality flows along the pages, you are getting less a textbook and more of a one-to-one classroom education, mindful, caring, and from the author to the reader. Take the first chapter that deals with the Creation account in Genesis. Too many times you see Old Earth vs. Young Earth vs. Theistic Evolution being tossed around in academics. Mr. Waltke reminds us to go beyond these debates though important in their points)and go into what the text actually says, word for word, meaning for meaning, toward what the ancient Hebrews of the Exodus would understand them all the way to how the first Christians and Christian communities would possibly understand the text. I would highly advise anyone who is interested in truly understanding God's important messages of the Old Testament and to use these messages in their everyday lives and in their ministries, pick up this book. You wont regret it. I would also suggest Tremper Longman's work as well.

Magisterial! Outstanding Old Testament Theology!

I was really impressed with the richness of this book. Bruce Waltke's goal in writing this book is to help Christians understand the OT, understand God's plan for them, understand how the OT relates to the NT, and how it relates to their lives today. Bruce assumes the authority of the 66 books of the canonical Protestant Bible. He teaches that the Old Testament's main storyline is about the kingship of God, God's kingdom as it breaks into our world (I disagree, I think it's about God's plan to redeem the world).

Waltke adopts a Reformed, covenant approach to interpreting scripture, rejecting the dispensational approach of his youth. He divides the Bible into several blocks of writing: the Primary History (Genesis-2 Kings) Wisdom Literature, and prophetic literature.

There is a great chapter on narrative theology, addressing the different points of view in the text (God, the human characters, the narrator). I also loved the chapter on poetics and intertexuality. The beautiful symmetry and chiasm in Genesis 1-11 sheds much light on the interpretation of this passage. He also discusses typology and how some texts evoke and alude ot others within the canon.

In the Primary History section of the book, Waltke discusses the gift of the cosmos, how God overcame chaos and darkness to create a habitable world. He contends that Genesis 1 is designed to counter pagan ideas about the construction of the world. The world itself is not divine, God is.

He also discusses the literary form of Genesis 1-2:4a, contending that it is narrative history, not myth, and that it reflects an Ancient Near eastern Comogeny, an example of God's accomodation to the viewpoints held by the people of the time.

There is a discussion about the gift of Adam, or mankind. He believes that the "us" in 1:26 refers to the heavenly court, not to the second person of the Trinity. He mentions that Psalm 8 and Hebrews 2:5-10 are reflections on Genesis 1:26-28. There is also a discussion of theological anthropology: the Hebrews words of body, soul, heart, spirit, and life.

Waltke also teaches that men and women are equal in creation, parenting, worship, prayer, and giftedness, but that the male is the hierarchical, government head, just as the Father as the governmental head of the Trinity.

Waltke also defends the essential historicity of the events in the Garden of Eden, the life of Abraham and the Exodus, as well as the fall of Jericho. For Waltke, Genesis-2 Kings really lays out the central theme of the OT.

I loved this book. I gained a lot of insight from the text from Waltke's exegesis. I highly recommend it.

Most Outstanding Old Testament Theology on the market

Having known Bruce Waltke personally for over thirty years and valuing his scholarship as one of the finest OT scholars in the world, I find his OT Theology to be his premier work. Typical of Bruce's high standards, this volume displays decades of his rigorous exegesis and meticulous care for the accuracy of the Biblical texts along with his masterful development of the themes of the OT and how each of them find they find their fulfillment in the person and work of Christ in the New Testament. No difficulties are avoided and every theme is traced from its inception carefully through to its climax in a New Heavens and New Earth. Bruce is one of those rare individuals who gives us both "roots and wings," and as the Spanish poet Juan Ramon writes "the wings take root and the roots fly." Bruce's theology also includes an invaluable summary of the poetics of Hebrew narrative and poetry, so that readers will discern not only "what" the Bible says, but "how" it says it. The text is easy to read, clear, and insightful beyond measure. This magisterial work will serve as a beacon of doctrinal purity and light for many generations, and not merely because of it's supreme scholarship, but also because of Bruce's humble heart and passion for holiness that pervades the text itself.

Best PM Book I own.....

While not in offical PM role, I often manage small scale projects for my immediate team at work (a team of about 50). This book came into my life just after I was strongly encouraged to take on a very large scale project (this time affecting my larger organization of 400).
Understanding Mr Dorset's Meta Rules for Project Management has been a tremendous help to apply and use while I work on managing this larger scale project. Being able to stop 'juggling' and start thinking like Bobby Fisher instead has changed the way I approach all my project now (and I'm buying extra copies of his book to share with folks).
Here's to stopping the juggling.

One of the best practical book on Project Management.

If you are looking to do a great job as a PM and still have a life, get this book. It is written by a very practical project manager for individuals who would like to be more effective and practical in their role as PM. How do I know this? I worked with him for several years on long term international projects with large multinational team. This book accurately reflects what he preached and practiced on the projects and hence my recommendation. I did not decide to write this recommendation as a favor to the author but as a favor to individuals, who can use a really practical guide to managing project and have a life. This author with his approach made it possible for all the team members to have a real work-life balance even on the road. Under him, our team excelled in every area imaginable on a project. I am glad that he decided to put his thoughts into writing so others can benefit from his approach. This would also be a great book for someone starting out as a Project Manager, as well.

This book was well thought out and is delivered with love from the author. I highly recommend this book no matter where you are in life. You can be married for years, divorced, newly married or single and you will find many gems that will help you for your present and future situations. Please don't let this book collect dust before you read it because you will be kicking yourself if you do!

Not your typical decluttering minimalist book...

This is not your typical run of the mill mimimalist book giving you inspiration and new ways to decluttering your stuff. In fact it's a well researched book of analysis & trends and giving you the background of how we became such a materialistic world in the first place and where our new world is heading....that being an experientialist one. I really enjoyed reading the case studies immensely and found it a very interesting read....

A readable book that's confused about whether it wants to describe or prescribe!

I read this book because I'd loved James Wallman's TED talk on the subject. I liked the central premise of this book: that materialism/ having too much stuff in our lives is a problem. I enjoyed the various anecdotes about people's ways of dealing with the 'Stuffocation'. I even enjoyed the scattering of research and data the author presents. I'll tell you where it lost me - I wasn't sure if the book wanted to be predictive or prescriptive!

To wit - the author describes the problem, Stuffocation, its root causes and history, and ill effects. He tells us he's a predictions guy. He describes three different ways people are dealing with the problem i.e. minimalism, simple living, and the 'medium chill'. He then rejects all these as not good enough and instead recommends experientialism. Then he shows how it's already catching on. The he talks about the developing world and the Church. Then he recaps. Um, OK!

It all felt a little loosely connected to me. Sometimes it felt like the author was being too glib about causation or in describing problems or solutions. Other times, he seemed more concerned with anecdotes and symptoms than causes and solutions. I guess the best way to say it is that the book lacked gravitas.

Still, it has some good ideas, and did make me think about the cupboards full of junk I need to sell or toss! It also made me realize I'm better off than most people I know, and while in some ways I'm stuffocated, in others I'm quite experiential! A readable, worthwhile book in the end.

It has some really good conversations, observations and even some clear recommendations for getting a handle on your consumerism if you wish to.
Perhaps my aversion to "How To" and "Self Help" treatises is partly to blame but, this book for the most part is rhetorical and the important concepts could have been communicated in 100 pages or less with much more cohesion and clarity.
Tough read because of the verbosity but, some good insights that that make the wading worthwhile.
