An Excellent Resource for the Beginner

I feel this book is an excellent introduction to the complex world of engine building. Having read it I'm beginning to feel competent to develop a plan for the rebuilding of my '71 Ford Pinto 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine. I certainly know the questions to ask the shop that will machine my block, and I'll know how to check and confirm their work. Exceptionally clear photos are throughout this book and Des Hammill writes in a manner exactly to my novice level of understanding. Another book by Hammill confirms this style is no fluke, because equally as readable is "How to Build and Modify Sportscar and Kitcar Suspension and Brakes". Though the experienced engine builder may not find enough useful pages in this book to paper a birdcage I feel it's a highly informative introduction to balancing and blueprinting a 4-cylinder short block. This book combined with a shop manual specific to your car arms you with the information necessary to tackle your engine rebuild with confidence. I give the book 5 stars because it gave me just the info I was looking for. This book will be used in combination with Peter and Valerie Wallage's: Rebuilding and Tuning Ford's Kent Crossflow Engine.

While tribunals routinely state that they are applying principles of public international law to determine disputes, many of the principles applied have only been developed recently in the context of investment treaty arbitrations, and tribunals are often guided more by the approaches taken by other tribunals, than by pre-existing doctrines of public international law. However, the volume of law created, applied and analyzed by tribunals is such that it is now possible to begin the necessary process of codification. International Investment Arbitration: Substantive Principles is an important step in this process. The book provides a detailed analytical survey of the developing substantive principles which are being applied to disputes by international investment tribunals. It considers the key questions that arise, and provides a clear description of the present state of the law as reflected in tribunal practice. The book examines the main treaties, analyzes published investment awards, and provides in-depth coverage of where investment disputes come from; who is a foreign investor, including nationality issues and foreign control; what is an investment; investor's rights, including admission to territories and State treatment of investors; expropriation; compensation; dispute resolution; transfer, assignment and subrogation; and future trends.

About the Author
Campbell McLachlan QC is Professor at Law at Victoria University of Wellington, and Barrister, Bankside Chambers (Auckland) & Essex Court Chambers (London) Until his return to New Zealand in 2003, Campbell was a partner in Herbert Smith in London. He led the firm's International Law Practice Group, and conducted many cases involving sovereign states. He has been Rapporteur of the International Law Association Committee on International Civil and Commercial Litigation and Chair of the IBA International Litigation Committee. In 2007 he was appointed by the New Zealand Government to the Panel of Arbitrators of the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes, succeeding the late Lord Cooke of Thorndon Laurence Shore is a partner in the New York office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP specialising in international arbitration and litigation. He previously practised at Herbert Smith LLP, London; the Office of the Legal Adviser, U.S. State Department and the Washington, D.C. law firm, Williams & Connolly. Matthew Weiniger is a solicitor advocate at Herbert Smith specialising in international arbitration, public and private international law and alternative dispute resolution. He has acted and advised in cases arising from all major industry sectors, and regularly appears as an advocate before arbitral tribunals in many different jurisdictions. He has experience in arbitrations under the auspices of the ICC, LCIA, ICSID, Zurich Chamber of Commerce and ad hoc under the UNCITRAL Rules and the English Arbitration Act. I compared this "2nd edition" with the 1994 original 1st edition (available in like-new condition for about 1/4 price of the 2nd edition)

ONLY DIFFERENCE is publisher merely appended a mostly worthless 50-page chapter on "Design for Enhanced Recyclability and Sustainability"

THEY CHANGED NOTHING ELSE. The first four-hundred fifty pages are COMPLETELY UNREVISED. Pathetic.

So just go buy the 1st edition for about 1/3 to 1/4 the price. (ISBN-10: 1569901295, ISBN-13: 978-1569901298)

Very Informative and Easy to Read and Remember

I needed to learn a lot about ancient Rome in a short amount of time for a project I was working on. DK Books are usually really good and showing a lot of pictures and getting a lot of information across in the least amount of technical text. This book did not disappoint. You're not going to find a lot of history on different emperors, but you will find tons of information on roman lifestyles, and that is what I needed. I was able to read it all in a single sitting.

Not a Computational Astronomy hands on manual

I am pretty disappointed with this book because i assumed that it was going to walk you through actually doing stats and ML on astronomical data sets. However, all of the codes in the book just show you how to use the astroML functions without using them on actually data sets. Instead the authors just make random variables then throw them into the functions... I would have much more appreciated the steps:
1. Show and explain an astronomical dataset
2. Do stats and ML on those datasets with a full explanation

real-world advice -- you'll find it here

Something that sets this book apart is how different numerical approaches to the same problem are compared. It's often true that you have several methods to choose from, and the best choice depends on the character of your data or expected solution or computational resources. This book does a great job of summarizing tradeoffs in such decisions, and gives insight into making appropriate choices.
