Five Chimneys: A Woman Survivor's True Story of Auschwitz, by Olga Lengyel

Olga Lengyel tells, frankly and without compromise, one of the most horrifying stories of all time. This true, documented chronicle is the intimate, day-to-day record of a beautiful woman who survived the nightmare of Auschwitz and Birchenau. This book is a necessary reminder of one of the ugliest chapters in the history of human civilization. It was a shocking experience. It is a shocking book.

Excellent Account of Life in Auschwitz
By Shreks
Where to start? Any movie or television show that I have seen has not depicted the horrors of Auschwitz as Olga Lengyel, a survivor of this horror, has done in her book. I n reading her words, I was stunned, appalled and horrified to know what the Nazis did to those who were taken to this terrible place. At times, I felt ashamed of the human race, of which I am a part, that could do these unspeakable things to fellow humans. But that's the thing....the Nazis didn't look upon those sent to the camps, for whatever reason, as human. I felt the anxiety building within myself as I read of Olga's and the other's work with the Resistance. That anyone could come out of that place with any semblance of sanity is a testament to her will to survive against odds that were clearly stacked against her. There were times I cried, reading of the treatment the Jews, Poles, Gypsies, political prisoners and anyone else who was trapped there, at the hands of the Nazis.

I am a student of History and have read other books regarding WWII from varying viewpoints, but this is the first book, outside of Elie Wiesel's Night, that really made me see and feel the horrors of the Nazi death camps. We must never forget what transpired lest it happen again in our world. This is an excellent account of life in Auschwitz.

Informative
By marie
Wow, having trouble with words. I was born in 1967 and my knowledge of the haulicost was very limited. No one ever told me that Americans were interned and killed. I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't really believe or at least understand the horrific medical experiments and sterilization that happened.
Normally, I don't want to read about or think about gruesome stuff. But my dear friend's grandparents perished at Auchwitz and I finally found the courage to educate myself on this topic, out of respect for the Orlowski family from Poland, that were political prisoners and were murdered. My friend Jan Orlowski bore the emotional scars of what his father went through at Auchwitz.
Everyone should read this and be grateful for whatever life we have. Deep lessons found in this book. It is not depressing, dear reader. Reading this book has given me greater strength to cope with my own difficulties. Really, compared to this sad reality in our history, how bad can your life really be? Ponder that while the long line at Walmart with only one cashier gets on your nerves. Or you bounce checks AGAIN and are scared of financial problems!!! This book will educate you in many ways and you will be a better person for having read it. Thank you, dear Author and publishers for getting this book to your grateful audience.

You are no better than anyone else
By Judy Luck
This book sure makes you think about how these people survived the holocaust with the odds against them 24-7-365. Once you were in a camp it didn't matter who you were on the outside, you all got treated the same. You are no better than anyone else, judges, bankers, priests, etc. With this lesson in history people may look back on we can preserve our lives, lifestyles, choices we make so we really think before acting.
