But real change will not be possible until we shift our focus from finding fault to developing partnerships, from documenting problems to discovering solutions. Learning to Liberate does just that by presenting true and compelling community-based approaches to school reform.

Drawing on over three years of ethnographic research, Vajra Watson explores the complicated process of reaching and teaching today's students. She reveals how four nontraditional educators successfully empower young people who have repeatedly been left behind. Using portraiture, a methodology rooted in vivid storytelling, Watson analyzes each educator's specific teaching tactics. A Gift to Education

Vajra Watson's book, Learning to Liberate: Community-Based Solutions to the Crisis in Urban Education, is a wonderful book to read for those involved in education. She provides four different perspectives of individuals that work within the community and their incredible, tireless dedication to improving the lives of the youth they work with. It gives great perspectives on how to not only connect with students that many educators struggle with, but to also engage them. It can be a challenge to work with and be able to teach students that come from so many diverse backgrounds that are different from your own. However, it shows that while you may not have all of the answers, there are those in the community you can reach out to that can provide the much needed support. It is very inspiring as to how much passion these individuals have for putting youth on the right track. They are able to set the bar very high. Dr. Watson captures their passion and illustrates their methodology very well throughout the book. Her time spent preparing this book shows just how committed she is to improving the lives of others. Not only will the featured communities benefit from their efforts, but the field of education and society as a whole can certainly learn from the advice given. Too many times educators lose hope, but we must not be so quick to judge the leaders of tomorrow as they can prove much more than we could have ever imagined.

A Beacon of Hope

Learning to Liberate was a required text in my critical pedagogy course this summer. I am extremely grateful that my professor chose to present us with this book!!! Some people may wonder, "What is the crisis in public education?" "How do I relate to the youth of today?" The answers to these questions can be found in Vajra Watson's Learning to Liberate. We hear constantly in the news, at conferences, and seminars that there is a problem in public education. A lot of finger pointing and blame shifting has occurred without positive results. While policies and government standards are created as a one-size fits all solution, they fail to address the individual life circumstances that many of our youth experience daily. On the contrary, Learning to Liberate is all about ACTION and acknowledges people that are "in the trenches" creating change in our communities. Watson's use of ethnographic portraiture takes the reader on a personal journey from one grassroots community organization to the next and she provides a detailed, heartfelt account of her interactions with four youth workers in California. Watson does an incredible job using words to create vivid imagery of her encounters and, as a result, I became emotionally invested in each chapter. This book reads like a novel and you get a real sense of Watson's desire to help misguided youth. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in education or looking to gain a deeper understanding about the environments that influence many of our youth. This book is a great investment for those who aim to liberate and empower youth from all walks of life!

I was Liberated

Leaning to Liberate was a great book. It was easy to read and I stayed engaged throughout each story. She allowed the reader to feel the passion, pain and triumph of each of the community leader and their students. Although they all practiced a different pedagogy, they all knew how to reach their students. They met them right where they were and figured how how to impact them when no one else could.

As a new teacher, I am learning that what and how I learned, was totally wrong. I learned that if I teach that way, I will be doing my students a disservice and I won't help them to get on the "freedom train."

Watson showed how poverty can easily start children down a path to destruction and there has to be someone willing to pull them out. She also pointed out how the schools are contributing to this crisis, but how teachers can help improve it.

While reading this book I went through an array of emotions. There were times I was sad, frustrated, angry, but when I finished, I was motivated. All of the leaders realized they could not reach all the children out there that needed their help, but they knew that there were kids out there they could help. That is the message that will ring loud throughout my teaching career. I will not be able to reach all my students, but I will stay motivated to reach as many as I can.
