It's colorful inside a computer.

I am reading the Nebula Award winning novels in chronological order. This is the winner for 1985.

I didn't like it but I didn't hate it.

It's full of detailed, but repetitive, scenes of life when you mentally get inside computer systems.These images, while fanciful, are completely off the wall. Maybe it's that the book is showing its age. The world is extremely violent to the point where they could be no structured society. Nobody thinks, you know, maybe I shouldn't kill that person.

There were several times when I thought, okay, it's over. But it wasn't. It kept going on with more of the same.

I was not able to identify with any of the characters, nor did I see their personalities develop.

These Nebula Award winners are a mixed bag. Some are great. Some are awful. This was slightly to the awful side.

Incredible imagination, incredible writing.

This book popularized a new genre - cyberpunk. Although Gibson may not have been the first to explore the cyberspace world (e.g., Brunner, Vinge, and others) he entered with a splash, or perhaps a tsunami. What is most ironic is that Gibson wrote Neuromancer on a typewriter, not being a computer user.

The opening line of Necromancer is often cited as an example of creative writing. Rather than opening with "It was a dark and stormy night" Gibson introduces us to his world with, "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel."

""It's not like I'm using," Case heard someone say, as he shouldered his way through the crowd around the door of the Chat. "It's like my body's developed this massive drug deficiency." It was a Sprawl voice and a Sprawl joke. The Chatsubo was a bar for professional expatriates; you could drink there for a week and never hear two words in Japanese...."

The book that started it all.

What can one say about the book that started cyberpunk? Well, probably not much about it starting cyberpunk, as Gibson notoriously hates the term. But this is a complete masterpiece. Thrilling, inventive, emotionally gripping, thought-provoking, grittier than reality ever was, and just plain cool to boot. I read Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash as my first foray into the genre termed 'cyberpunk' (and have since re-read it many times, as I'm sure I'll do with Neuromancer) and decided I had to see the start of it all. I wasn't disappointed and I would highly recommend this for any fan of technology, hacking, body modification, virtual reality, politics, science fiction, futurism, any sort of punk, mind-bending, or exciting stories of any kind. Do yourself a favor and read this if you haven't already; do yourself a favor and reread it if you have.

Gorgeous book AND excellent research

I almost hesitate to add a review since there are two other reviews here that do such a fine job. I actually attended the University of Kansas and was therefore able to visit the Spencer Museum of Art and see some of these works on display. I purchased my copy of this book at the museum and used it as part of my source material for a theses I wrote while matriculating at KU, so I am very familiar with this book.

This is a very, very impressive book with loads of gorgeously rendered and reproduced wood-block prints. If you like Japanese art you will wish to have this book simply to look at the pictures. My children actually like to get this book down and look at the pictures, half because it is truly amazing art and half because the art is focused on the creepy-crawly and supernatural. An element of Japanese culture and psychology is viscerally on display in these fine prints and it is easy to see that this form of art is the precursor to the Manga that is so popular today.

This book is much more than a simple visual display though. There is a wealth of information, meticulously researched, presented here on the creatures that make up the pantheon of the eerie and supernatural in medieval Japan. For serious students, or even those with a surfeit of Hobbits just wanting a better grounding in an alternate milieu of the supernatural, this is an excellent tome, well-written, easy-to-follow, and chock-full of information. Buy it for the pictures, buy it for the text, or buy it for both, you won't be disappointed.

a rich feast, both visually and intellectually

As the preface to "Japanese Ghosts and Demons" notes, this book is the fruit of interdisciplinary studies undertaken by the Spencer Museum of Art and the University of Kansas at Lawrence. And it is the results of just such an interdisciplinary approach that have lifted this book out of the realm of an ordinary exhibition catalogue and propelled it into the rarified ranks of an art history classic.
In historical terms, the focus of the book is the Edo period. This long (1615-1868) and peaceful period saw a concatenation of several important trends, including the perfection of the woodblock print, a democratization of art that--for the first time in Japan--served the masses, the rise of the kabuki theater, and a diffusion of popular literature and tales that often focused on the ghostly and the supernatural. The fusion of these trends was most clearly seen in the woodblock prints of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, Utagawa Kunisada, and Ichiryusai Kuniyoshi, many of which are reproduced here. These three giants of the late woodblock period not only made a major contribution in documenting the theatrical and literary trends of the Edo period but also provided many of the visual models still employed in Japanese-style tattooing.
Apart from the rich feast of art presented in this book, "Japanese Ghosts and Demons" will nourish the souls of those interested more in the fields of anthropology and comparative religion. Even today, when Japan has emerged as one of the most technologically advanced nations on earth, fundamental cultural beliefs are still strongly informed by a sense of mutability. "Japanese Ghosts and Demons" makes an important contribution to explaining this phenomenon, in which the boundaries between the living and the dead, humankind and animals, the animate and the inanimate, and the sacred and profane are far more permeable than is believed to be the case in the modern West. Several thousand years ago, before the rise of the three great monotheistic religions, most of the world's societies believed in a universe more pregnant with magical possibilities, a type of universe that this book helps us better understand.

One of the best books available on Japanese supernatural

"Japanese Ghost and Demons" is something I really wish I could have been a part in making. A college with a fine collection of supernatural-themed Japanese art, in a variety of mediums, decides to offer an interdisciplinary study class with each group producing papers on a folklore theme, with supporting artwork from the collection. Brilliant.
Each of the chapters is incredibly insightful, providing a complete education on the topic. Along with the traditional subjects such as the Oni, Ghosts and Tengu, there are many less-often covered subjects such as Sennin: The Immortals of Taoism and Shoki the Demon Queller. I was particularly pleased to learn about Shoki, as I was browsing a print shop in Kyoto and was able to recognize the Demon Queller himself in a few prints.
The plates are, of course, beautiful, and cover an incredible range of medium, from the familiar prints to the drawings, paintings and netsuke carvings. The reproduction quality is high, and the size of the book is "coffee table" size, allowing for nice sized images. The majority of the plates are in full color.
As someone who has read quite a few books on Japanese supernatural folklore, I recommend "Japanese Ghosts and Demons" as one of the best. It would be hard to be disappointed by this treasure.

About the Author

Cindy Stanfield earned her Ph.D in physiology at the University of California at Davis. She teaches human physiology lecture and laboratory courses and neuroscience at the University of South Alabama (USA), and researches sensory modulation. She received the College of Allied Health Professions Excellence in Service Award in 2003 and the University of South Alabama Excellence in Teaching Awards in 2004. She also serves as the advisor for the health pre-professionals at USA. She is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, the International Association for the Study of Pain, the American Pain Society, and the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions.

A bit laggy. Not as easy to read as paper

Very laggy. I am unable to scroll down or across a page in many cases when zoomed in. It reloads back to the default position. Need to be zoomed in to read without strain on my laptop.
Using the search tool is convenient, but you can only search a specific word or two, so don't think that you're going to "control f" through the entire book to find answers. Would rather have a paper textbook

Review of the 1964 and 1967 editions

"Modern Introductory Analysis" was published in four different versions:

1. Teacher's Manual ("Teacher's Edition" is printed on the spine) - This has a separate teacher's manual (usually on green paper) at the beginning of the book along with teacher notes throughout the rest of the student text. In particular, short answers are provided as dialog to the pedagogical (Why?), which is encountered continuously in the student text. Answers to exercises are in the back of the book.
2. Student Version ("With Odd-Numbered Answers" is printed on the spine) - Answers to odd-numbered exercises are in the back of the book.
3. Student Version ("With Answers" is printed on the spine) - Answers to odd and even-numbered exercises are in the back of the book.
4. Student Version (no additional annotation on the spine) - No answers to exercises.

However, those answers in the back exclude both graphs and proofs. If you desire answers for graphs and proofs, they are included in a separate publication, viz., "Solution Key for Modern Introductory Analysis." Nota bene: the "1980 Impression" (reprint) of the Solution Key, ISBN: 0395255554, is compatible with the 1964 and 1967 editions of the text.

Though its title may suggest otherwise, "Modern Introductory Analysis" does not concern itself with epsilon-delta calculus proofs. Rather, it is a kind of pre-calculus text originally intended for high school seniors who had completed a course in Algebra II and Trigonometry in the previous year. It was the follow-on book to Dolciani's "Modern Algebra and Trigonometry Structure and Method Book 2." There is substantial overlap in the topics of these two books, although "Modern Introductory Analysis" covers them at a higher level. Other topics in "Modern Introductory Analysis" are new material, for example, mathematical induction, vectors, limits, derivatives, transformations and polar coordinates. There are > 4400 exercises. Most of the exercise sets contain at least a handful of proofs to whet your appetite. Considerable added insight is gained by doing these proofs, which serve to extend the basic material. The presentation is axiomatic. Yet, you will find a fair amount of intuitive development preceding the theorems. Some of the theorems are stated without proof, either left as exercises, or with a citation (in the Teacher's Manual) to another book containing a proof.

The 1964 and 1967 editions of the book are nearly identical. The 1964 ed. has several easy-to-spot errors that are fixed in the 1967 ed. However, be advised of certain less obvious errata in the 1964 ed. You may wish to revise your 1964 ed. as follows:

1) Exercise 36, P. 182, "T - S and P - S" should read "T - P and S - P"
2) Exercise 11, P. 312, "the length" should read "a function whose minimum is the length"
3) Exercise 12, P. 312, "what is" should read "let L be" and "(-2, 5)?" should read "(-2, 5). Find a function whose minimum is L."
4) Exercise 13, P. 312, "which for a fixed volume requires the least material (surface area)" should read "of greatest volume having a total surface area of 96π sq. cm."
5) Exercise 18, P. 313, should read "Solve Exercise 17 if triangle POQ has minimum area."
6) Exercise 34, P. 327, "b = 1" should read "b ≠ 1"
7) Exercise 14, P. 362, "log 2 (base e)" should read "log 4 (base e)"
8) Exercise 23, P. 362, "b = √a " should read "b = a� "

Great Series

This text, along with all the Dolciani books by Houghton Mifflin were the corner stones of any high school math program in the 60's-70's and early 80's. This book particularly was the book that I learned pre-calculus from, and made me become a math major. The books were literate in their context, never watered down, but not so abstract that a high school student couldn't read and follow. What makes this book so unique is the fact that mathematical induction is introduced in Chapter 3 and is carried throughout the book. No other precalculus book prior or since has used this approach. Mathematical induction is a proof driven treatment for the topics which follow. It makes the students think in a logical manner and enables them, by proof, to understand the full argument of why certain "things happen" in math as they do. The Teacher's Edition's were the best of any series (until Houghton Mifflin changed the format, and made them less teacher friendly). I still have 2 TE's of this book and the solutions key, and still refer to it when I need to...it beats any precalculus book out today. Once Dr. Dociani passed away, the entire Houghton Mifflin series went down the tubes, their current texts DO NOT hold muster to this old classic!!!
