About the Author
Mike Smart is the founder and CEO of The Smart Method. In Mike's long career as an IT consultant, Mike specified, designed and delivered IT solutions for large corporations all over the world. Still The Head Of The Class

The good news is that this updated how-to manual is great at learning Excel 2016. I downloaded Excel 2016 for my home PC while at work I use Excel 2013. I am not a power user but Excel versions 2013 and 2016 are for all intents and purposes nearly the same. So are Mr. Smart's books.

Here is what I said about the 2013 version of his Essential Skills book, most of which still applies to his 2016 version:

"I have a vast library of Excel manuals. My usual go to one is the Missing Manual. But for learning Excel (2013) quickly, the Smart Method is excellent. Each page is a lesson. You ramp up in skill and knowledge at a diliberate pace. The writing is clear as well as the diagrams. The font is a perfect size unlike another Excel manual I reviewed some months ago. If you are new to this version of Excel or want to improve upon your current skill set, then give this manual a try. I am sure you will find it extremely useful. It is better than the "Dummies" series, "Step by Step" or "Visual" series of books."

Before I bought the 2016 Skills book, I had purchased the Excel 2016 In Depth published by Que. Crazy, but Jelen, the author, did a massive overhaul of his 2016 manual cutting it in half as compared to his 2013 book (1,200 pages). His new one comes in around 650 pages. Pogue has not come out with their Missing Manual for Excel 2016. Not sure if they will. Reality is that I like Smart's books so much better. He really does a fabulous job teaching Excel. All the pictures and graphics are very clear and easy to read/follow. I am eager to buy Smart's Expert Skill level book when that comes out.

Extreme self care

This book, at times, can be difficult to read. This is because you will have to give up certain behaviors that you are used to. They may not make you feel pleasant, but they make you feel safe, because you know what the outcome will be. But if you want to change your life, you have to make changes in your thoughts and behaviors.

Each chapter is about making one significant change in your life, which the author recommends you do over a period of 30 days. (There are 12 chapters total, so theoretically you could go through the whole book in a year.) For example, a list of absolute yeses and nos has been very helpful in stress management!

I feel like some of her suggestions are unrealistic for some people. However, I do recommend this book to anyone who has a stressful job (or stressful life in general), because I think there is something in it for everyone.

Great Advice from a Trustworthy Source

I am a long-time fan of Cheryl Richardson and have several of her books in my library. I was looking through the self-improvement section at the local bookstore and saw this book. However, I was embarrassed to buy it because of the title. One of my great endeavors at the moment is to be a more habitual, consistent follower of Jesus Christ and the title of this book seemed to be the antithesis of way I am striving to live. I passed. However, days later I again thought of this book and while traveling, ordered it on Kindle. I have read it and, again find much wisdom and sound advice. I am still uncomfortable with the concept of extreme self-care, but the commandment to "love your neighbor AS YOURSELF" comes to mind. I would (and will) recommend this book to a friend. Don't judge a book by its cover, or in this case, its title.

Kindle version needs "The Art of Extreme Editing"

This review primarily concerns the Kindle presentation of the book, not the book's content (which is "standard" Cheryl Richardson). There seems to have been NO editing of the Kindle version. The copy is rife with hyphenated words in the text, which are, at first, distracting, then downright irritating. Some bulleted lists are missing their "bullets." As for content, the book recaps many of the suggestions that Richardson has made in earlier works. It is, however, a helpful re-introduction to her main premise that women need to put the air mask on themselves first, before assisting others. I found the "resources" at the end of each chapter to be helpful. I've been a fan of Richardson's for many years, so I was interested to see what this new book offered. Too bad the medium didn't convey the message in a more readable format.

For over 30 years this remains one of my treasures of my bible study books. Glad to see it out in Kindle finally!!!!

Approximately 30 years ago I had the privilege of hearing Zola speak in a tiny church in a little town in BC, Canada. He spoke on the Rapture of the church, why we need not fear that the Lord really IS coming back for us, why it is very evident that this is a pre tribulation rapture, and why we can be sure of these things. From that day forward I never wavered in that belief. Nor in the necessity to bless and pray for Israel, the Jews and the peace of Jerusalem.

I bought this very booklet from him then. It had so much of what he said, in concise easy to grasp terms. The "Readers Digest" version of what he just spoke. Later I bought some other of his booklets as our finances permitted but this booklet above all the others, became so beloved to me, so valuable that I refused to EVER loan it out for fear of irreparable loss.

Even though he goes into greater detail about the first century wedding customs prevalent in Jesus day in another booklet, the condensed version in the center of this booklet contains all the pertinent details. I've use this booklet to teach from for many years as a result.

I cannot over emphasize the value of Zola and his gift for making things simple. As another favourite Christian author Dr. J. Vernon McGee once said--"putting the cookies on the bottom shelf" meaning that the truths of the gospel should remain accessible to all believers regardless of their age or mental abilities. The rule I abide by in teaching is that anything taught will be better absorbed, retained and used thru life if it is presented in the simplest possible form.

I was so grieved to hear of Zola's passing a few years back. I got my Kindle the summer of 2011 and have consistently checked every few months to see if Zola's work made it to Kindle. I was so happy yesterday to find this here along with many others in his booklet series. It seems that only one remains to be "kindle-ized". That is "The Signs of the End" and I look forward to seeing it soon.

I am happy to say that whoever was doing the job of creating the Kindle version of these booklets did a superb job. The clickable table of contents works well in each book, the formatting and the text are unchanged, as is the cover art. Small details, but someone put loving care and attention to making sure these gems are perfect in their Kindle setting.

I can't recommend them highly enough, 5 stars hardly covers how I feel about Zola's work. Don't despise them for their size or price. This one, and it's siblings are some of the best things you will ever have.

And for those who homeschool as I did, please consider these to introduce upper elementary and middle schoolers to this content. I used them in personal Bible study with my children, and like McGee's stuff, these are so easy for the young to understand, that they are valuable just in that context alone.

But don't overlook the value for adults who lead busy distracted lives. Simple concise teaching is a jewel. This is a fine example.

This is an excellent little book that provides a rich contextual imagery for an insightful and revealing understanding for our relationship as the Church (universal) to the Bridegroom, Christ Jesus, to more clearly understand as Gentiles what to expect in the last days when He comes for His Bride. I strongly recommend reading this book to any and all believers and especially followers of the Lord Jesus!

GREAT LITTLE BOOK

Zola manages to put in just a few short pages what others fail to do in hundreds. He gives a biblical and cohesive explanation of what believers will be doing between the rapture and the end of the tribulation. I believe his description of the judgment seat of Christ makes the most sense when viewing the whole seven years from the aspect of a Jewish wedding ceremony. I would recommend this book to those who want to know more about our "Blessed Hope"

A strategic approach to negotiations

Most books on negotiation combine the hardball win-lose tactics with the more effective win-win approach. 3-D Negotiation is different: it adds a new third dimension to negotiation, mainly the need for developing a dynamic strategy on how to set up and shape the optimum situation and overall conditions for negotiations (away from the table), and well before negotiations start. Of course, the authors believe that negotiators must employ all three dimensions as needed during most negotiations.

This new third dimension includes, among other things, "acting to ensure the right parties have been involved, in the right sequence, to deal with the right issues that engage the right set of interests, at the right tables, at the right time, under the right expectations, and facing the right consequences of walking away if there is no deal."

Here is real-world example of acting to ensure the right parties and the right sequence: A US firm was looking to establish a joint venture in Mexico and had identified three potential partners (one excellent, one good, and one that barely meets the set criteria). Should this firm start negotiations with the best prospect, and if those negotiations fail, then move to the next, and so on? Or wouldn't it be far better if this US firm makes it known in the industry (in Mexico) that they are looking for a joint venture partner, and induce these three prospects to come to the US firm? Negotiating simultaneously with the three potential partners was indeed better, especially that the US firm set up the negotiation conditions whereby the three Mexican prospects were rushing to compete for the joint venture!

Although this book introduces a third dimension to negotiation, the other two dimensions are also well covered by the authors, with a large number of real-world examples. The second dimension covers designing value-creating deals, including the traditional concept of enlarging the pie, and how to make lasting deals. The first dimension focuses on the tactics at the negotiation table, including problem-solving tactics such as shaping perceptions, setting ambitious target prices, interpersonal skills, cultural empathy, and many other tactics familiar to those who have read traditional negotiation books.

In short, 3-D Negotiation is a welcomed addition to the topic of negotiation, especially due to its strategic approach to negotiations. I particularly like the idea of backward mapping the negotiation process, starting with the desired target or outcome, then mapping all the parties, their interests, no-deal options. I was also intrigued by the authors' philosophy and the 3-D strategy of: "Let them have your way", as well as their concept of "Zone of Possible Agreement".

Although this excellent book is written with important and complex deals in mind, the 3-D approach can be indeed applied to simpler deals and negotiations. In fact, the reader will find a large number of examples of negotiations ranging from the simple ones such as buying a car or a house, to the more complex ones such as negotiations between countries, or among large international organizations.

Excellent book for advanced negotiation strategy

In "3D Negotiation: Powerful Tools to Change the Game in Your Most Important Deals" by David A. Lax and James K. Sebenius, the authors observe that most negotiators think in one dimension comprised of two mutually exclusive strategies, win-win or win-lose. A negotiator often focuses on either value claiming in the win-lose approach or value creating in the win-win approach. Both strategies leave money on the table. If a negotiator expands the dimensions of the negotiation to supplement tactics with deal set up and deal design (i.e. transforming to 3D), the negotiator can both create and claim value simultaneously. This book is a must read for anyone looking to enhance their negotiation capability.

If you negotiate for a living, this is a must read. Although the book is a few years old, it still has fresh insights into how to approach a negotiation in a new "3-D" way which makes sure nothing is left on the table and that the process is as constructive as possible. Even if you do not negotiate for a living, you will benefit from this book because, whther you realize it or not, everyone negotiates at some point in their lives. This bok will give you an advantage when you do.
