OMFG!! If you don't read this you're an idiot!

Free Amazon download.... and I had little expectation. But once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. I'm a decades long student of history, so I expected a rehash and BOY WAS I SURPRISED!!! This isn't a dreary historical journal of the war, its written by one of the few correspondents allowed with the British Army at the beginning of WWI in France. He's tasked with writing pieces for the papers back home, but under military censorship. This work give his personal recollections no doubt from a journal or other notes about the personality and gruesomeness of the battle. No where, in any historical account of battle have I read such a real, front-line, no-holds-barred description of the granules of a battle. Remember, that at the time, the nearest large-scale conflict was the American Civil War and although there are graphic descriptions if it, WWI was on a scale of human destruction what we can't imagine. 37 million people killed compared to around 700,000 in our Civil War.

Gibbs is detailed and precise, stating his direct sources often. He has met everyone on the British Front he speaks of, from General French to individual soldiers in the ranks of each and every regiment involved in front line action in the major battles. There's a point when he describes what the men run into when digging a trench.... the product of the artillery in a previous battle over the same ground very early in the war....

Don't miss this one. I think the one star rating guy is one of the "American Idol" types and either didn't understand or spend any time with the book.

Stunning

I recommend this book for anyone who can read. I knew very little about WW1 other than vague impressions about "trenches" etc. This book prompted me to read other books on the subject. It is very hard to put down, and it will change you forever once you read it. I think it should be mandatory reading for students.

This book should be required reading for all high school seniors. A course should be taught on the follies and horrors of war, with this book at the core. A course that teaches that all men are brothers in the end. Gibbs has done an amazing job here of describing World War I. Everything, from the mud and slime, bits of decomposed bodies, stupidity of G.H.Q. and those who ran the war, misguided patriotism, to the questioning of the Christianity of both sides, that could lead to such butchering of young men. 900,000 in England alone! And only 20 years later . . . . Giibbs knew it would happen. How?
